Reviews for Warhammer 40,000: The App

clunky and needs work. saying it is better than the 9th edition app is not saying much at all. my biggest issue is the army builder--you have to click the unit entry to click the unit card then click the individual drop down menus to view the rules for each unit entry! the export to pdf is just the unit name, weapons, and points cost no additional rules. finally, if the layout of the army builder stays this way, please remove unused range and melee weapons from the unit cards.

So close to finally making a good app. So disappointing. When the app came out, it had its issues, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. Now, as of writing (09/07/2023), all info is behind a paywall. This game is already expensive, and you want me to pay for just the rules that should be free? No thanks. I advise all to skip this app and look for other ways to get your lists. There are other free options.

The app is okay, it's a bit clunky when making army lists but the real issue is the gigantic paywalls, I don't mind paying a subscription to use the app, but only having access to some armies after you pay unless you use a codex code is a bit much. Also, the crusade missions are missing and even if you bought the crusade rules there's no code to enter to unlock those sort of rules. It might be worth paying for if they added the legends units to the army builder and rules section.

The app itself is actually pretty fantastic, as long as your faction still only has an index. It's reasonably organized, very responsive, and includes all rules, stratagems, etc. in addition to the datasheets. HOWEVER, as soon as your codex releases, ALL of your faction's info gets locked behind a paywall. The hobby is already expensive enough, at least make the rules more accessible.

Back to 1 star it goes. The paywall just continues to get worse on a product that wasn't particularly great to start. Far too many clicks to get around and see gear. No overall view with the rules laid out like their free competition has. Grouping of gear makes no sense as well. Why does a model with 4 of a weapon have it listed as 1 weapon and 3 weapons? Why can't I add and remove units to my list on the same page? Would a minus be that hard to add? Mediocre for free. Bad for cash.

It was starting to get ok then they made the incredibly foolish decision to make it limited to 1 army. You can't copyright game mechanics, so third party tools will be better. And now they've started stripping out data sheets unless you have the codex. Insane. Make this 5 bucks a month with a great army builder, day of release up to date rules, data cards, etc., a quality army builder with notes, and history, and printable, and they'd make way more than with these silly books.

The build portion of the app is alright. It lays out the options in a way that is easy to see what you get. I would NOT pay for this service as it is now. PLEASE LET US DUPLICATE AND IMPORT ROSTERS! It takes so long to input data that I don't want to have to do it twice for similar lists. Please add a sign in list building of WHAT is wrong. Right now they say "x unit is illegal" but there are no signs to show why.

A decent app, the Army builder is a very appreciated tool. Will literally uninstall once they start charging money because the number of free alternatives just makes it genuinely not worth it. I spend enough on plastic crack, if they think I'm going to pay a subscription or a fee just to build my list I think that's silly. GW is in fact, not struggling for cash, and you are not keeping them afloat with your in-app purchase.

Loved it, helped my friends and I really appreciate 10th after we all did purchase the rules and codexes for our armies in 9th. None of us have any interest in buying codexes again, nor do we have any desire to pay for a subscription to the rules we need to play the game we've already invested thousands in. It's greedy, it's short sighted, it is actively killing our passion for the hobby. I used to be able to check rules for models at the shop, I'd buy some for my friends! Now I can't. 1/5.

Update: app is paid now, so unless you have already existing armies to edit you can't have more than a single army. For all of the issues the app has this is totally not worth it, especially considering the other options out there. Really bad still. Errors just say that an error exist, not what it actually is. Some models don't have a proper way to say how many of a selection you want of a specific weapon, just a check box.
