Reviews for Castlevania: SotN

This is my all-time favorite game, and it's worth some points for nostalgia. However, the control scheme is just terrible. The gameplay is reliant on being able to press more than one button at a time, and the onscreen buttons just don't allow for that. Also several controls are missing as others have noted, like wolf swim and double jump/run for Richter. You're better off with an emulator and mapping the keys to a Bluetooth controller.

As far as ports go this is about as good as you can expect for a mobile game. The touch controls work as well as you can expect. It can make things mildly frustrating in the heat of combat. I do like the speed keys for spells once you unlock them. It does support a Bluetooth controller which is nice but features such as the speed button for spells can't be mapped to it. Only bug I noticed was in the beginning when the music glitched out when I paused. Beyond that worth the $2.99.

I find it hard to rate the controls higher than two and feel as if I should put it to one, but controller support helps that rating a bit but it's still a struggle. What hurts it the most is the controls. The fact you can't remap the controllers input, or be able to place the on-screen controls anywhere is a real struggle. It is easy to get used to them but the attack buttons are too small in my opinion and I feel like I miss them too much. Game is good overall but controls slack a bit.

Like many other reviewers, this is one of my favorite games of all time, and the mobile port has allowed me to dive back in and play again after many years. While it mostly runs smoothly, it's also rather buggy. For some reason, if I accidentally choose the "continue" feature on the main screen, it actually corrupts my saved game, causing me to lose quite a bit of progress. Also for whatever reason, diagonal arrow icons in the menus and library shop don't render properly.

I love this game, bring back childhood memories. It's also cool that you can choose the character. My only issue with the game, which is a big one are the controls... they could have easily added some way to adjust the placement or even added the option for a virtual analog stick. I'm constantly messing up with simple tasks in this game due to the lack of control.

I love the game itself. SoTN is my most favorite out of the franchise. I've beaten the game many times. I was stoked when I seen it in the Play Store. I'm going to keep it for nostalgic reasons but I'm not enjoying paying it on my phone. My only complaint is that the controls are awful. They're unresponsive at times, masking playing impossible at times. AWFUL CONTROLS on an otherwise legendary game

Not bad. It's not the PS1 version so the voice acting is different. The controls are okay but being able to resize and move them would be a very welcome (and in my opinion), much needed addition. NOTE: If the clock room won't open for you (you won't hear any ticking from the clock), save the game at a save point, exit and load FROM THE SAVE SLOT. I had this issue and it will impede game progression. This is a work-around but is a bug that needs to be fixed.

Great offline port of the PSP version of the game. Touch controls take very little time to get used to and react sharply for even the tough platforming levels. Spells and transformations map to convenient hotkeys. Continue options allows you to return from the last room you entered, no need to hike to a save room before you put the game down. If you have only played the PSX version before, there are many bosses, items, and dialogue clips that weren't included in that version of the game.

I bought this on vacation while I had some down time because I watched the Castlevania anime and got the itch to play this again. This is probably the worst way to play it tbh and it's mostly brought down by the controls. It could be my phone and the sensitivity, but it is very frustrating when you miss an attack or don't move when you want. That said, it is SOTN which is very good and if you can get past the controls or have a controller, it's a good experience.

I am loving everything, only issue is the controls. Why can't I customize them!? It's ESSENTIAL. Like, changing the placement and size of buttons, adding extra buttons, etc. I think blocking could be smoother, and there are some things you just *can't* do - its impossible to use the sheild while jumping because it's just such weird placement, I understand this is a game for the cell phone but come on man we should at the very least be able to adjust controls. That would make it so much smoother

The attack button area needs to be much larger than it is to accommodate for the fact that you can't feel a physical button to tell you when your thumb is in the right place to hit it. Kept missing the attack button by a fraction of a hair, which meant I only attacked about 40% of the time I wanted to. Absolutely infuriating. I suggest skipping this port for one on a console or on the PC so that you don't have to deal with this problem.

Best game I've played on Mobile. Very good recreation of SOTN with 3 different characters to play as (Alucard, Maria, and Richter) I've gotten many hours of gameplay out of it. My only gripe would be the controls can take some getting used to and can feel clunky at first but once you get used to it it's a blast. And best of all no annoying micro transactions or ads anywhere. Anyone considering getting into the Castlevania franchise of games should definitely give this a try.

I'm a big fan of Castlevania, the controls are okay, and the way the spells are set up make the game waaaay easier to make progress. However, I'm having trouble getting to the colosseum. The left statue in the clock room doesn't open. It's supposed to open every other minute but it doesn't. I've spent at least 10-20 minutes waiting for it to open and it won't. Is anyone else having trouble with this or is it just me? :/

The game is a great game, but the Android version sucks. Specifically, the spacing for the controls are too far apart, especially on the directional pad. If you're not very precise when you try to push the buttons, it doesn't recognize your movements. I love the Castlevania series and Konami, but this Android version needs revised controls. Save your money and get it on a PS1 Emulator instead. They all have better controls than this. When Konami revised the controls, I'll re-rate it five stars.

Used to play on a Galaxy S9 and everything ran great. Upgraded to an S23 and all of the sudden the game is WAY too fast. Everything on screen happens at about twice the normal speed, gameplay and dialogue. Gameplay is an issue because jumping feels like I have lead feet, I have to make perfect jumps for even the most basic platforming otherwise I drop like a brick and have to redo everything. I don't see a setting to alter game speed, so I have no idea how to fix this.

I was very happy to see sotn ported to Android. This is one of my all-time favorite games. Then I tried to play it. Started out with minor problems like occasionally nothing happened when I tried to attack. Maybe it's me? Then it got worse, and jumping didn't work. I hit the center of the jump button 3 times and nothing happened 🤨. Now, I get to the clock and the internal timer isn't working. The clock is stuck. Clock fix: Save and load your game. Do not use continue, as it breaks the clock.

Castlevania Symphony of the night is such a beautiful game that was ahead of its time. It still rivals most games today. The best part of all its actually fun to play, and you can sink so many hours in the story/exploration that just makes it worth it. If you do get this, definitely hook up a controller and enjoy the experience of Castlevania sotn like it was meant to be played back on the playstation.

I haven't had any of the major issues like some others. The clock tower area worked fine... Mist form worked fine, unless they didn't know or forgot that you need the Power of Mist to stay in mist form. (found below where you fight Dracula) You need Bat Form to get it, and the first Mist to get that.... The controls are a little bit weird. Never had any jump button issues, but the attack button is too small or too close to jump. I think the buttons could have been adjustable.

one of my all time favorite games of all time, I was excited to play it on our road trip. You took a classic and absolutely destroyed it with incompetence. Controller support works until it doesn't. Bluetooth ot wired, doesn't matter, Alucard will be in mid jump or attack and just come to a standstill because the game stops registering your controls for a second. That could be overlooked if the game didn't crash in the same spot every time. Don't waste your money for this joke of a port.

Clock Tower bugged. Got double jump and farmed enough to buy the higher end gear from the Library, but when going back to the clock tower to enter the Coliseum, the left statue is bugged and doesn't tick with the in-game clock. Can't progress any further until this bug is fixed. It's been two years and this seemingly minor bug has not been fixed. What a waste of time.
