I've tested a bunch of virtual pet games and Talking Tom Cat is one of the better ones in my opinion. The talking feature is genuinely hilarious and the gameplay loop of interacting with Tom and watching him react is really addictive. That said, it can get a little repetitive after a while and the constant ads are kind of annoying if you don't pay. But overall it's a fun, lighthearted app that's perfect for killing a few minutes here and there.
