The ratios worth knowing

16:9 — video's default since HD. Every platform accepts it.
9:16 — vertical video and phone screenshots. Now the dominant format by volume.
4:3 — older cameras and iPads; still the native ratio of many sensors.
1:1 — square, the safest choice for a feed that crops unpredictably.
21:9 — cinematic ultrawide, letterboxed almost everywhere else.
19.5:9 and 20:9 — modern phone screens, which is why a 16:9 video shows bars on a phone.

Crop or pad

When a ratio does not match its destination there are only two options and both cost something. Cropping fills the frame and removes content from the edges, which matters when the edges hold text or a face. Padding keeps everything and adds bars, which looks deliberate on video and careless on a screenshot. The table above shows exactly how much you lose either way for each target.

Design for the crop. If an asset will appear in several places, keep everything important inside a centred square. That region survives every crop from 9:16 to 21:9, and is why platform design guidelines all describe a "safe area".

Questions people ask about this

How do I calculate aspect ratio?

Divide both dimensions by their greatest common divisor. For 1920 × 1080 the GCD is 120, giving 16:9. To resize proportionally, multiply the new width by the original height and divide by the original width — 1280 × 1080 ÷ 1920 gives 720.

What size should Google Play screenshots be?

At least 1080 × 1920 pixels for phone screenshots, in 16:9 or 9:16, with a maximum of 3840 pixels on the long side. Between two and eight are required. The feature graphic is a separate mandatory asset at exactly 1024 × 500, and the store icon is 512 × 512.

What aspect ratio are modern phones?

Most are 19.5:9 or 20:9 — taller than the 16:9 that video is shot in. That is why a standard video shows black bars on a phone held sideways, and why vertical video at 9:16 leaves a strip of interface at the top and bottom rather than filling the screen exactly.
