The arithmetic of untracked post

A plain white envelope saves about $3.30 against tracked postage. If two percent of them go missing, the expected loss on a $45 card is $0.90 — so the envelope still wins. On a $200 card the same two percent costs $4.00, and it does not.

The second, unmodelled cost is the dispute. An untracked package that a buyer says never arrived is a loss you cannot contest on any marketplace, and it also costs the feedback. That is why most sellers set their own threshold well below the arithmetic crossover.

2026 rates and what changed

  • eBay Standard Envelope — $0.64, with limited tracking, capped at $20 sale price and eBay-only. The cheapest tracked option that exists.
  • Plain white envelope — around $0.78 with a stamp. No tracking, no recourse.
  • USPS Ground Advantage — about $4.10 under a pound, with tracking and $100 of cover included. The workhorse.
  • Priority with signature and insurance for anything into four figures. Signature confirmation is what actually protects you in a not-received claim.

Rates rose on 18 January 2026, with lightweight Ground Advantage up around 4% and the additional-ounce charge at $0.29.

What is the cheapest way to ship a trading card?

eBay Standard Envelope at $0.64 where it qualifies — cards sold on eBay for under $20 — since it is the only sub-dollar option with any tracking. A plain white envelope with a stamp runs about $0.78 with no tracking at all. Above $20, USPS Ground Advantage at roughly $4.10 is the default.

At what value should I start using tracked shipping?

Arithmetically, where the expected loss from untracked post exceeds the extra cost of tracking — around $150 at a 2% loss rate. In practice most sellers switch far lower, around $20–30, because an untracked package a buyer claims never arrived is an uncontestable loss on every marketplace, plus the feedback damage.

Do I need insurance when shipping cards?

Ground Advantage includes $100 of cover, which handles most single-card sales. Above that the added premium is cheap relative to the card, and above roughly $500 signature confirmation matters more than the insurance — it is the evidence that defeats a not-received claim rather than a payout after the fact.
