Plenty of cards do not print their year anywhere obvious. Four clues usually settle it, and the statistics on the back are the most reliable of them — the last season listed is almost always the year before the card was issued.
The statistics are the best clue
Card backs print a player's career to date, so the last season listed is the season before the card was printed. A card whose statistics end with 1989 is a 1990 card. This holds almost universally, and it works even when nothing else on the card gives a date.
Other clues, and what they bound
- Copyright line. Usually the issue year, occasionally the year the design was registered. Reliable but not infallible.
- Barcode on the back. Barcodes appear on cards from the late 1980s onward, so their presence sets a floor rather than a year.
- Holofoil and refractors. Arrived in the early 1990s and became common mid-decade — another floor.
- Serial numbering. Late 1990s onwards. A numbered card is not from the junk wax era.
- RC logo shield. Licensed baseball from 2006. Its presence dates a card firmly; its absence proves nothing about older cards.

How do I tell what year a card is from?
Read the statistics on the back: the last season listed is almost always the year before the card was issued, so stats ending in 1989 mean a 1990 card. If there are no statistics, check the copyright line, then use design features — barcodes from the late 1980s, holofoil from the early 1990s, serial numbering from the late 1990s.
Why do some cards not have a year on them?
Manufacturers were inconsistent about it for decades, and many designs simply had no room for a date on the front. The back always carried statistics, though, which is why that is the reliable clue — the card had to show the player's career through the previous season.
What does 1989-90 mean on a card?
It is the season, not the issue year, and applies to sports whose seasons span two calendar years — basketball and hockey. A card marked 1989-90 was issued during or just after that season, which for dating purposes makes it a 1990 card.
