Mobile Data Usage Calculator
Work out how much mobile data a month of your habits consumes. Streaming video is the whole story for almost everyone — one hour of 4K uses more data than a month of messaging — and this shows you exactly where the gigabytes go.
Video is the entire question
For nearly every phone user, mobile data consumption is a video number with rounding errors attached. An hour of 1080p streaming uses about 3 GB. An hour of messaging uses about 0.02 GB. You would have to send messages for 150 hours to match one film.
| Activity | GB per hour | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Video, 4K | 7 | Pointless on a phone screen and eats a plan in a weekend |
| Video, 1080p | 3 | The default on most services over Wi-Fi |
| Video, 720p | 1.5 | Visually indistinguishable on a phone held at arm's length |
| Video, 480p | 0.7 | Fine for talking-head content |
| Short-video feeds | 0.8–1.2 | Autoplay makes this far heavier than it feels |
| Video calling | 0.5–1.5 | Group calls sit at the top of that range |
| Music, high quality | 0.07 | A whole day of listening is about 1 GB |
| Online gaming | 0.04–0.3 | Games use very little data; the downloads are what hurt |
| Browsing and mail | 0.05 | Image-heavy sites push this up |
| Navigation | 0.005 | Effectively free; offline maps make it zero |
Three settings that halve most bills
- Cap streaming quality on cellular. Every video app has this setting. Moving from 1080p to 720p halves consumption for a difference you cannot see on a phone.
- Disable autoplay in feeds. Short-video and social apps stream continuously while you scroll, whether you watch or not.
- Restrict updates to Wi-Fi. App and system updates are gigabytes, arrive unpredictably, and have no reason to travel over a metered connection.
What plan size to buy
Take the monthly figure this produces and add roughly 30%. Usage is not uniform: a trip, a hotel with bad Wi-Fi, or a week of tethering can double a normal month, and overage charges are priced to punish. If the total lands above 50 GB, unlimited plans are generally cheaper than paying for the tier that would cover you.
Questions people ask about this
How much data does streaming video use?
Roughly 0.7 GB per hour at 480p, 1.5 GB at 720p, 3 GB at 1080p and 7 GB at 4K. On a phone, 720p and 1080p are hard to tell apart at normal viewing distance, so capping cellular streaming at 720p halves your consumption for no practical loss.
Is 20GB a month enough?
It depends almost entirely on video. Twenty gigabytes covers about 13 hours of 720p streaming a month, or 6 hours of 1080p, with room for everything else. If you stream on your commute daily you will exceed it; if you mostly use Wi-Fi and stream occasionally, it is generous.
Does online gaming use a lot of data?
No. Multiplayer games send small position and state updates — typically 40 to 300 MB per hour, less than music streaming. What consumes data is downloading the game and its patches, which run to several gigabytes and should always be done on Wi-Fi.
What uses the most mobile data?
Video, by an enormous margin, followed by short-video social feeds whose autoplay streams continuously while you scroll. Everything else — messaging, mail, navigation, music, gaming — combined is usually smaller than a couple of hours of streaming a week.
