Why certification moves the price so much

Autographs are the easiest thing in the hobby to forge and the hardest to verify by eye. Buyers price that risk in: an uncertified signature from a major name typically trades at a fraction of the certified equivalent, and on very forged signatures the discount is steeper still. Certification does not make the autograph real — it makes it saleable.

The two categories of authentication

  • Witnessed. The authenticator was present when the item was signed. This is the strongest form and the reason in-person signings carry a premium.
  • Opinion-based. An expert examines the signature after the fact and issues an opinion. Reputable, widely accepted, and still an opinion — which is why two services can disagree about the same item.
The threshold that matters. Authentication costs roughly the same on a $100 item and a $10,000 one. Below about $150 the fee usually exceeds the uplift, which is why cheap signed items are rarely certified — and why buying uncertified at the bottom of the market carries real risk.
