The thirds convention
An innings-pitched figure of 185.1 means 185 and one third, not 185.1. Treating it as a decimal produces an ERA that is wrong by a small but consistent margin, and it is the single most common error in hand-calculated pitching stats.
What ERA hides
Earned runs exclude anything that scored because of an error, so a pitcher behind a poor defence is partly protected and one behind a good defence gets no credit. ERA also swings hard on sequencing — the same events in a different order produce a very different number. WHIP is the more stable measure of how much traffic a pitcher allows, which is why it became the standard companion.

Multiply earned runs by nine and divide by innings pitched. The catch is the innings figure: 185.1 means 185 and one third, so it must be converted to 185.333 before dividing. Treating the decimal literally is the most common source of a wrong ERA.
What is a good WHIP?
Below 1.00 is elite and rare over a full season, 1.10 is excellent, 1.30 is around league average and above 1.45 is trouble. WHIP measures baserunners allowed per inning, so it is less sensitive to sequencing luck than ERA and tends to be the better predictor of the following season.
What does 6.2 innings pitched mean?
Six and two-thirds innings — the pitcher recorded twenty outs. Baseball writes partial innings as thirds after the decimal point, so .1 is one out and .2 is two. There is no .3, because three outs completes the inning.
