What each number actually measures

  • AVG — hits per at bat. The oldest headline stat and the least informative, because it treats a single and a home run identically and ignores walks entirely.
  • OBP — how often the batter avoids making an out. Walks and hit-by-pitches count, which is why it correlates with scoring far better than average does.
  • SLG — total bases per at bat. Measures power, not frequency; a .500 slugger might hit .240.
  • OPS — on-base plus slugging. Crude to add two differently scaled rates together, and it works anyway: it tracks run creation closely enough that it became the standard shorthand.

Rough benchmarks

An OPS around .700 is a replacement-level regular, .800 is a good everyday player, .900 is an All-Star season and 1.000 is an MVP-calibre year. Those thresholds drift with the era — the same OPS meant something different in 1968 than in 2000 — which is why era-adjusted versions like OPS+ exist.

How do you calculate OPS?

Add on-base percentage to slugging percentage. OBP is (hits + walks + hit-by-pitch) divided by (at bats + walks + hit-by-pitch + sacrifice flies); SLG is total bases divided by at bats. Adding two rates with different denominators is mathematically crude, but OPS tracks run creation well enough to have become the standard shorthand.

What is a good OPS?

Roughly .700 for a replacement-level regular, .800 for a solidly good everyday player, .900 for an All-Star season and 1.000 or above for MVP-calibre production. Those figures shift with the run environment of the era, which is why OPS+ exists to normalise against the league.

Why is on-base percentage better than batting average?

Because making outs is what ends innings, and batting average ignores the most common way of avoiding one. A hitter batting .260 with 90 walks reaches base more often than one batting .290 with 20, and creates more runs — a distinction average cannot see at all.
