Why field goal percentage is nearly useless

It counts a made three and a made layup identically while ignoring free throws entirely. A centre shooting 60% at the rim and a guard shooting 44% from three are close in value per shot, and FG% says one is far better.

True shooting is the more complete measure because it folds in free throws, which is where a large share of efficient scoring actually comes from. The 0.44 coefficient is an empirical estimate — not every pair of free throws ends a possession, and technical and and-one situations are why it is not 0.5.
