So here's my take on onX Backcountry Trail Maps GPS. I've tested a bunch of navigation and outdoor apps, and this one is pretty solid overall. The mapping and GPS features work really well, and I like how you can see detailed terrain, weather, and potential hazards on your routes. And the route planning tools are also super handy. The main downside is the ads in the free version, but you can pay to remove them. Compared to other apps in this category, I'd say onX has a more complete set of features for serious outdoor enthusiasts.

Pros

  • Tons of detailed maps and trail data for hiking, biking, and more
  • Useful features like offline downloads, weather forecasts, and hazard alerts
  • Route planning tools with elevation profiles are great for trip prep
  • Works well as a standalone GPS navigator when you're out on the trails

Cons

  • Free version has annoying ads that get in the way
  • Can be overwhelming at first with all the different map layers and settings
  • Some features like custom waypoints are locked behind the paid subscription

Description

Been using onX Backcountry Trail Maps GPS for a couple months now. It’s basically an app that helps you discover new hiking, biking, and climbing trails, and navigate through them using GPS and detailed maps. Pretty solid if you’re into the outdoors.

Here’s what you can do – you can download maps for offline use, see real-time weather forecasts, and even check for things like wildfires or avalanche danger on your route. There’s also a cool feature where you can plan custom routes and see elevation profiles. Took me a while to figure some of that out, but it’s super useful.

Look, if you spend a lot of time hiking, biking, or exploring the backcountry, you’ll probably get a lot of use out of this app. It’s not perfect – the free version has ads that can get annoying – but overall it does the job pretty well. Worth checking out if you need a good GPS and mapping app for your outdoor adventures.
