So here's my honest take on Tunepal. I've tested a bunch of music apps and this one's actually pretty solid. The core functionality of identifying tunes just by playing them works really well, and the database covers a ton of traditional songs. I like that you can save favorites and download sheet music too. On the downside, it can struggle with more obscure tunes, and the interface is a little clunky in spots. But for the casual traditional musician, I'd say it's worth downloading.

Pros

  • Tons of traditional tunes in the database
  • Easy to use - just play a tune and it identifies it
  • Free to download and use
  • Saves your favorite songs for quick access
  • Lets you download sheet music

Cons

  • Doesn't have every single tune, so it won't always find what you're looking for
  • Interface is a bit outdated and not super intuitive
  • Can be slow to search the database sometimes

Description

Been using Tunepal for a couple months now. It’s basically an app that lets you identify traditional Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and Breton tunes just by holding your phone up to your instrument and tapping record. Pretty solid app if you’re into traditional music.

Here’s what you do: You open the app, hit record, and it listens to the tune you’re playing. Then it searches a database of over 23,000 tunes and shows you the name of the one it thinks you’re playing. And there’s also an option to download the sheet music, which is pretty cool. And you can save your favorite tunes – took me a while to figure that out but it’s useful.

Look, if you’re into traditional folk music, you’ll probably like this. It’s not perfect – the database doesn’t have every single tune out there, so it doesn’t always find what you’re looking for. But overall it does the job. Worth checking out if you want a quick way to identify songs when jamming with friends.
