Awful app! Went from great to terrible! The last two hikes we tried (WITH the paid version!) got us lost because the GPS was all over the place and not accurate at all and now I can't even use the app because the first screen that pops up is an app for some Peak outdoor lens but the "x" to get off the screen is so near the top of my screen that no matter what I try I can't close it to use the all trails app so it's not only awful but now it's completely unusable.. what a waste of money!
Reviews for AllTrails: Hike, Bike & Run
← Back to AllTrails: Hike, Bike & RunI had not yet granted AllTrails the ability to track my GPS location. I always look through an app in its entirety before granting the things it asks for. But what's this? It's already suggesting trails that are local to my current location? That can't be right, it doesn't have GPS permissions yet! I immediately deleted the account and removed the app. That's a huge breach of trust, especially for a prospective customer.
Great app for finding trail. but I've upgraded to the "Peak", for excessive price of $80. What extras do you get? The heat maps are pretty nifty. Custom routes would be nice, but you can't look up an existing route, and leave part of it out while adding another section, at least not on the phone app. Outdoor Lens looks interesting, but I doubt it works without cell phone signal, which is the case in most national parks.
Really unhappy with the added peak tier. Build your own route has always been a key feature of the plus membership. I can understand adding new features which you could package in the peak tier, but taking previous features away to force users into a pricier tier just ain't right, and a real disservice to the users that have been with alltrails since the beginning. It's a shame, but I'll definitely begin shopping for a new app to migrate to once my membership is up for renewal.
I'm a paid user. I like the capabilities to search for nearby trails; to save them into lists for future use; and to download maps. having said that, it's way too easy to "pause" the current activity. too many times I've returned to my vehicle and only a small percentage of the hike was recorded because it paused (from the screen activating in my pocket, or an accidental touch of the button while looking at the map, who knows?), and I've stopped using the app for real-time navigation & stats.
I used it for a few days shy of a year without issue, then when I had to collect data using the Fitbit app on my watch it interfered with Alltrails. a 4.2 mile hike was only recorded as a 2.4 mile hike in All trails. Cancelled my subscription so it didn't auto renew in a few days as it normally would, until at least I no longer need to use the Fitbit app.
obnoxious. simply obnoxious. it's fine that they should want to monetize the app, but holy candy craps, it seems that this is primary, and navigation is secondary. plus it doesn't bring up shared trail URLs right - this is a one time hike, and my friend sends a trail, and it comes up in a browser, then directs me to the app, and directs me to give my credit card number, then the trail never shows up. Verdict? Unreliable, unsafe, not a substitute for real nav.
Do NOT get a yearly membership. I did, and shortly after, they started removing features from the membership I'd already paid for. They later released those same features as part of a new, more expensive membership tier that didn't exist before. Total scam. Don't reward these leeches with your money. There's other, better, more ethically run apps.
solid app, wish they offered a lifetime subscription rather than paying yearly for life but that's the model these days so it's expected. Other than that it would be nice to have the option to send to my garmin watch on the app, instead of having to log in on the website and dig through the options there. I'd give stars back once we get those options.
I've been an Alltrails user for over a decade. It has been a solid 5-star app. On a recent hike, the app drained battery at an insane pace. I had to switch to airplane mode and just not touch my phone (never had to do this prior), but that didn't help. I eventually had to kill the track once I got to the summit turn around point. 50% in 2 hrs. Looking online it seems to be a widespread issue. Would like to restart using app and restore 5 star rating ASAP.....
The free app is limited, there is no offline functionality in it whatsoever. The pro upgrade is $30 annual subscription fee. Not a $5 app to buy, or even $50 app to buy, but an ANNUAL subscription fee. I understand this isn't a new thing from other reviews, but this doesnt make it any better. And now they made a nifty heat map feature, but they are UPSELLING IT for even more money🤬
(will change rating if the refund actually goes through) Still charged after free trial was canceled. Signed up to see our local trails, but discovered they weren't on the app, so I canceled the free trial and moved on. Then I discovered I was charged for it anyway. It wouldn't be a big deal if the app wasn't so expensive, but $85 is a huge charge.
This is the solid trail hiking map app for the average hiker. It's the perfect resource to plan trips and hikes. I haven't downloaded the paid version, but this is perfect for my needs. The methods used for milage and the sheer amount of trails is second to none. Also read the feedback from the hinges themselves. Learned that after a rough hike, and now it's changed my plans a couple of trips.
As someone who has tested many of the apps (for offroading), this app is 50/50. It is great to use for finding trails and checking reviews. However, it lacks in navigation being set up poorly. Does not switch to landscape mode, does not have a dark mode for riding at night, waypoints are difficult to navigate or go to ither than just having to watch the map to see if you are going that direction. Missing some basic items that most of the other apps have for navigation / tracking.
There is no way to drop a GPS waypoint on the map. I think it is a must for any hiking app. The other problem is the location indicator. When hiking, it should be smooth as you are changing directions. The location indicator sometimes does not move for up 20 seconds after you change directions. It's not good when you are trying to find your way. It seems alltrails lack the basic essentials for a hiking app.
tried this app over the past weekend and really didn't care for it very much. it had waypoints located to find water and other items along the art lobe trail but never could get them to show on the map or how to use that information. also partway through our trip the app automatically logged me out and obviously I couldn't log back in because there is no internet connection even though the maps are downloaded.
SCAM!!! They are hiding the unsubscribing function so deep that you have to spend a lot of time figuring out where, in three different platforms, it is hidden, and how to deactivate it. They don't even have an unsubscribe button, and under the "Edit Account," you'll have to figure out that turning off autopay is a subscription cancellation! I'll never return to support this tricky, dirty marketing tactic.
I used the plus version daily for years to get accurate mileage for my daily walks. Simultaneously with the introduction of "Peak," my mileages started showing up as a straight line between the start and the farthest point. I tried many fixes including uninstalling and reinstalling. I believe the only effective "fix" will be to upgrade to Peak. Nope. I'm deleting my payment information and will move on to an app that doesn't try to extort money from me.
Pretty good but could be better. As I use the app more, unfortunately I find more issues with it. I want to be able to simply swipe through the pictures of a trail, but I cannot find a way to do that other than the first few when they are partially obscured by other information, then it prompts me to switch to thumbnails of all images, and I cannot swipe through the full images. Also, if I select a national park, I cannot use filters to select among the hikes. Very frustrating.
I like this app for the ability to search trails, however, I wish the trails that charge admission were marked instead of having people drive all the way out to an area just to find out it's a campground and you can't get in without paying. The very next trail we tried was out in the middle of nowhere, it just dropped us off on a residential road where we had no service, nowhere to park, and no trail in sight. We're traveling and so far, this app is sending us on a goose chase.
