It's not great and not better than duolingo. I finished spanish on duolingo and got the premium subscription here bc they say they go up to level c1 or 2, unlike duolingo which only goes to B2. This app has a LOT of bugs, missing audio, text doesn't line up with audio, etc, and it's mostly a lot of very long boring reading passages , sometimes with audio, where you then have to answer questions on the following pages about what you read or heard. There are little to no speaking opportunites.
Reviews for Busuu: Learn & Speak Languages
← Back to Busuu: Learn & Speak Languageswould be a 5 star. unfortunately it lies and says you can learn for free, well once you get up to about chapter 7 it requires you to have premium. they'll say you don't that you can "watch ad" but no matter how many adds you watch you still can't continue on... unless they can fix, don't waste your time and how would emailing you help? the only thing that would help is you updating your app so it doesn't do this. what a pointless reply!
So far, I like the overall experience with this app, compared to duolingo. However, I did notice some discrepancy between the data regarding fluency percentages in relation to word strength. When I open the application this morning, I had a mere one 'strong' word, "Część!" Oddly enough, I hadn't quite memorized the exact spelling for the word I had supposedly learned fluently. After practicing my vocabulary, and strengthening my skills in the other 11 , my fluency remained at 3%.
I've been using the free version for a week or so. and I like it so far. less money than duolingo. should I decide to purchase. What bugs me though, is that the charges are recurring?? if you can remind us ahead of time that it's ABOUT to renew, why can't you just remind us its about to expire?? I think you count on people quitting and forgetting about their subscription and get charged again for something their not using. If i pay for a year, cancel that same day, will I still get my year?
I like this app so I purchased a Premium subscription. I do have 2 requests though: 1) Please INCREASE the kanji and hiragana FONT Size!!! It's really difficult to differentiate between び and ぴ, for example. I don't have this issue in other languages apps. And 2) I'd really like the option of turning off all Romaji - I think this is a crutch that will hold me back from improving my reading skills. Thanks for listening!
The app is great for learning in a structured way. However, the developers need to fix the audio issue. you have to increase the volume, and then the ad loads with a louder volume which gets annoying. Also, many times after you watch an ad, the lesson won't load. you have to restart the application and rewatch an ad to load the lesson.
I have a few issues with this app, and they are frustrating because they would be relatively simple to improve upon. 1. The free version regularly prompts you to watch advertisements, which load seamlessly. The lesson itself frequently crashes. 2. At least at the B2 level, the lessons START with a lot of very layered and nuanced topics about environmentalism, burnout, etc, have you listen to/read long passages about them, and THEN LATER do lessons covering vocabulary and grammar.
I really hate to say it, but inferior to DuoLingo, if you're not willing to pay for the full version. Speaking practice? Need premium. Reviewing what you've learned? Need premium. I've been using the app for two weeks, and starting today I either have to buy premium, or need to watch an ad to start each lesson, on top of the ads at the end. Even DuoLingo doesn't throw this many ads at you. I wish I could rate this app higher, but I can't.
It seems good on the surface. My concern is that the app encourages you to correct other students work. While that is usually fine, I have noticed a number of students, who are not native speakers, incorrectly marking people's work. This could be confusing. So I have decided, for my part, to ignore other people's comments on my own work for now.
Update: Poor design once you pay for premium, was not automatic. Had to google the issue and found the solution to "restore purchase" then app was working correctly. I will add 2 stars to my initial rating. Poorly designed. Upgraded to premium, but still got ads and could not access premium. I canceled and lost money from the subscription. Is this a scam to get at least a monthly payment? Very upset. Maybe possible to go through credit card company to deal with the fraud.
After spending a week on this app it's ok for learning but there's a few issues with it. First there are multiple glitches in the Japanese course where some words are missing or are registering as completely different words than what they look like leading to me getting the question wrong and the hints for the hiragana characters aren't helpful at all. Second there's a lot of ads (an ad after each lesson). Last there is no lifetime membership like with other apps which is disappointing.
This app provides a lot of video pronunciation examples and some translations and explanations. Writing, listening, and speaking are addressed. But the community-correction approach is uneven and didn't meet my needs. Regarding the 7-day trial: It wasn't easy to cancel the 7-day free premium. The Cancel Subscription button only appeared in the Google app, not the browser. I wrote to Busuu's help email and got an auto-reply saying they'd respond within 72 hours (which could be beyond the 7 days).
The lessons in this app are really good, and I appreciate actually learning about the language, but I usually can't do more than one at a time. I watch the ad to get a new one, but it just stays stuck on the loading screen (and of course the ad always loads fine... so I just watch it for nothing). I wish I could actually do a few lessons at a time.
This app has some really good information about grammar and fun tips along the way. there are videos of real people pronouncing words and sentences. The community part is an amazing addition. It allows native speakers of the language that you are learning to help correct spelling, grammar, or even pronunciation of words and sentences. I'm sure there are better ways to learn a language, but this has kept me working on it day by day.
I like this app a lot more than Duolingo, I like that it has more real life listening examples, etc. Where this app becomes problematic is that I can never get the lessons to actually load on my phone. I could click the "watch ad to open lesson" button 15 times, watch 15 ads, and when I close the ad it doesn't open the lesson so I try it again. It works no problem on my computer though, but this is super inconvenient, and honestly makes me want to find another app that doesn't waste my time.
This is usually such a thorough and helpful app for learning languages. The content is in reasonably sized chunks and the explanations make so much sense. I used Busuu to practice Latin American Spanish, Japanese, German and French. The Arabic course needs A LOT of work though. Not only does it need more lessons but I shouldn't be getting quized on words until all of the letters/characters have been covered. Especially in review mode it would be good if there was an option to just review letters
UPDATE: Serves ads but course content no longer loads! Useless! Better than Duo, but over a mere week they've become so aggressive about advertising Premium at every opportunity I am no longer considering purchasing a subscription, especially considering they can't be bothered to create speech segments that actually work. It doesn't matter how simple the word or sentence, how fast or slow I speak, whether there's background noise, it just fails me every time. Also takes forever to load.
I was considering buying a premium subscription after Duolingo lapsed, but no more. The ads to buy premium are egregiously in your face, popping up at least 10 times per lesson, completely covering the screen. The other ads are the worst kind, too, find the x or the >> three times in a row for the scammy apps you've seen a million times before. And on top of that, the lesson often fails to load after you finish the ad, and you have to do it all over again. All huge red flags. No thx
Learning Korean Great app I find myself really enjoying the lessons. The lessons aren't overwhelming. 12 days in and I can understand most words. They aren't punishing free customers for not paying for a subscription. What I would change 1. Going back within a lesson; accidentally hit continue and had to restart the lesson (this might be a paid subscription feature) 2. Adding all words to the dictionary (again might be a paid subscription feature) Overall great app Highly recommend
Busuu will introduce 5 new words & a new type of conjugation all at once, explain nothing, quiz you on it *once*, & then move on without giving you time to absorb anything. And reviewing lessons doesn't even count towards your streak! Phrase translations are often missing, no option to pause and resume lessons (which are sometimes 10m long), and the ads for premium are INCESSANT. Clean UI, some great features, and the progress tracking is clear and satisfying, but I'll be looking elsewhere.
