Application works very well for me! I would like to see the listing of books by title on a large server (as displayed on your phone ) available by initial alphabetical letter first so that you do not have to scroll down forever to get to titles that begin with the latter letters in the alphabet. This way you could divide large databases into 26 parts prior to beginning a search. Title listing should be done the same way as authors. Overall application works extremely well!
Reviews for Calibre Companion
← Back to Calibre CompanionExactly what I need. Makes it super easy to wirelessly send my Calibre books to my phone. It also performs the function of a mobile Library, making it easy ro browse my synced book collection on my phone - even showing my custom metadata fields. It's almost like a mobile version of Calibre, only that it doesn't include a viewer, but it works flawlessly with your third party viewer app of choice.
Great application and pretty much delivers on everything it offers!! Ther is only one issue I have found with no clear solution. It doesn't recognise, as a reader, moon reader pro. Therefore, for reading the books, i have to manually open moon reader pro.
Last Nov-2023 update broke this app. Now cannot open books even though I have 2ebook reader apps. Also cannot do backups. Also Android settings cannot find it when doing a search -- was trying to see if cc had lost any permissions, could not find. Please offer us a rollback option or fix it. Have learned that breaking this app was the new owner's purpose. They now rent a different library app. Look it up. Bought cc to break to force people to spend money.
The App is useless now, since it no longer recognizes book files or connects with readers. As other say, they "fixed" what wasn't broken and now it's over a month since the update and no signs of correction. A simple rollback will do the trick, but it appears abandoned. Avoid at all costs. So sad. It was great while it lasted.
Used to be a great app but stopped working. It now forgets the location of Dropbox library and does not allow to select it (only root listed). So connection no longer works. Reinstalling the app helps for one run then it happens again. An older version on my tablet still works. I am afraid I need to go to the competition.
UPDATE (Feb 2021) Developer no longer responding to communications, and appears to have abandoned the project. (Response below was from last year.) Issues with multiple reader apps in Android 11. Can't recommend until problems sorted out. Support has been hit-and-miss since the app was sold to a new developer. :-/ Calibre is an excellent ebook library management and conversion tool. Sadly, it's not available for the Android. Calibre Companion is like having a copy of Calibre on your tablet. Very handy if you use several different ebook reader apps. Connects to Calibre and allows you to transfer and manage your ebooks in a single location on your tablet. Browse books, and then have Calibre Companion open your selected book on whatever reader you specify. I love this app.
CC has been an amazing app... But, it hasn't been updated in two and half years now and it's starting to break. I can still send books to the device, but it seems meta-data sync has stopped working so changes made in Calibre are not being sent to the device and I just found that none of the books I've read in a while now have been marked as read in Calibre. It was well worth the money when working, but not if it's not being kept up. If this dies, it will be a shame.
This app used to work perfectly. It did have some flaws which I had hoped would be resolved no such luck. It says companion to Calibre, but it's only a read only database. You can't edit on the go. or read from the companion. You have to have a separate eBook reader for that. Now I can't get it to sync wirelessly with Calibre I have to have internet Drive.
I've used an iPhone for two years before switching to an Android. I like to read pulp novels like The Shadow and Doc Savage. Calibre companion is a simple solution to an annoying problem. It makes synchronizing eBooks and reading lists in Calibre with my Galaxy S3 as simple as can be. Just start Calibre, pick your library, eBook or reading list, connect your Android over Wifi, wait for the sync to complete, and you're done. To the Calibre and Calibre Companion developers - FANTASTIC WORK!
Broken abandonware - avoid. Developer has abandoned the app - latest version is broken, and will break your ability to sync with Calibre, and connect with reader apps on your device. Changes to Android security mean the dev has released a simple update only, to stop the app being removed from the App store, but he didn't bother checking to make sure the app still worked properly. Either find a replacement sync tool, or rollback to an earlier version that still works via apk.
Followed all of the instructions and it won't allow me to connect, so I have no way to read books on my phone because I can't access them. The help isn't helpful & there's no way to change the settings (email address, settings, etc) so whatever you put in when you first got the app, you're stuck with. Disappointing because I used to love this program & recommended it to everyone.
No updates. This is not work in progress, and the recent Calibre update (to 6.0, I think) broke the connection to the server. Tried everything, but the only solution was to go back to the previous Calibre version. While it is OK for me for now, it might be less and less so if the plugins stop being compatible with the older version. I would advise against getting this app because it is not being actively updated. Used to love it and it is sad that it got abandoned.
Hands down the best e-reader library app that I have found (and I spent several days searching through the free ones). It syncs to my Calibre library on my laptop so new books as well as my position in those books are ready to go across platforms. Calibre Companion also allows for excellent library organization as well as your choice of an e-reader app (moon+, drive, Adobe, etc.). Definitely worth the 5$ in my opinion.
This is best app of its kind available. Different users may have different needs and no single app can address all those. I found it very useful and a breeze to use. Setting it up on any device is a breeze. Connect the computer and the device to same wireless network and you are all set. Worth every penny in gold. Last but not least—the excellent customer support. One of its great features that i love is that it lets you move your library to external storage in case you need space.
If you have Calibre and you have a phone you should have this app. It took me a while to get used to the user interface, which is designed for a phone screen and therefore different than desktop Calibre, but once I had used it a bit and realized how the features translated I think the Companion people did a marvelous job of fitting Calibre to a phone. If you have a Kindle, check the Help files for ways to deal with the problems that Amazon forced on the Kindle for Android app.
I have used and loved Calibre Companion for years; it is the best way of getting books from calibre on my computer onto my phone for reading. The latest update has made things much more difficult, though; while I can still get and mark books I cannot open a book in any reading app (I've tried my usual FBReader, Moon+, Aldiko...). It will happily attempt to open a book in Songbook - at least, that's the app that pops up when I hit Read. The book doesn't actually open.
I have loved Calibre Companion for years. Smooth transfers and syncs made it one of most favorite applications. The latest (in a long term without them) update 5.4.4.21 has completely shaken my faith in the developer. I am currently unable to see, much less remove or add, files to my library. There is a link for what to do if this happens, but the link is to a blank page.
Latest update to version 5.4.4.21 broke the link to Moon+ Reader, and I can no longer open books from Calibre Companion. Tried reinstalling both Moon+ and CC to no avail. Aside from that, I've been using Calibre Companion for years and have never had a problem, even during the many years that the app languished with no development. I'm glad to see that there is work being done on the app once more and hope that a fix will be pushed out for the recent issue.
While trying to connect to my local content server, I received an error message stating my (device) library is read-only, and to "see faq"--an external link to a website that no longer exists. Regardless, the likely reason for the error is the way file access permissions are handled differently in newer versions of Android--meaning, if you receive this error, there isn't much you can do, besides petition the custodian of this app to make the requisite changes to get it minimally functional again
