I'm rather disappointed. I was excited to actually be able to buy audiobooks and keep them. However, since they only play on chirp's app, I feel like I do not really own them. I want to put the them on my favorite book player, which has all the features I use and enjoy. Among other issues, Chirp's sleep timer is horrible, and that's a feature I use all the time. Instead of having the sound gradually fade out to silence like a good sleep timer does, it just cuts off suddenly, which wakes me.
Reviews for Chirp Audiobooks
← Back to Chirp AudiobooksI am trying to get away from Audible, but man this app kind of sucks. Multiple reasons... I have a pixel 7a, and the app is up to date, but yet it too often does not play after I press play. I am in this constant cycle of restarting the app, finding my spot again +because it also doesn't keep your spot if it 'crashes' and refuses to play. Second, I don't like that there isn't a way to see how many total hours/minutes you have read. Not just what you have left.
When the app works, it works great. However, whenever I pause it for more than a few minutes, it freezes and goes back to the beginning of the chapter, rather than staying where I paused it. I have to close the app, reopen it (sometimes several times before it'll start working again ), then try to find where the spot where I left off. It's very frustrating.
Overall, the experience is pretty good. They provide access to heavily discounted audiobooks that sound great. As an app, though, it's not the best. The Android Audio experience is lackluster at best, having no official support and running through AnyAudio does not allow pause, skip, or rewind functionality, meaning you have to manually do those from the phone directly. It also plays in the background improperly, such as continuing to play while on a call or after disconnecting Bluetooth.
Great Prices! I was able to listen to a book with out too many problems, I did find some stuttering & stopping, & when I closed the book and came back later to pick up where I left off, I had to re-select the chapter I had last heard to get the audio book to start up again. Otherwise it would sit and spin the little circle (literally forever) without ever starting the book again. I do not consider this too big of a problem that it would make me not use Chirp again....Just a nuisance.
For the most part, I actually really enjoy it. The prices are outstanding and the catalogue includes some great studios not included by Audible, such as Graphic Audio. However, the audio quality is not as good, they fail to edit some of the compact disc and cassette markers, the app is not as polished, and worst is all files are stored in internal memory with no option for sd card storage meaning it is only usable with higher end devices with adequate spare space. I can't recommend.
For the first couple of years of use this app was almost bug-free. Unfortunately, the bugs are now infesting it, at least on my Samsung s25 Ultra phone. 1. It has trouble downloading a book: it spins indefinitely 2. The books often stop in mid-reading for no apparent reason 3. Often, after a book has stopped, it will not start again even upon closing & reopening - I have had to reinstall the app to get it working 4. The app runs in the background - after it's been closed - and drains my battery
frequently stalls, especially if I pause a book and come back to it later, even just 5-10 minutes for example, when answering a phone call or taking a video picture. Also when changing from Bluetooth devices i.e. car to headphones. I have to close the app then reopen. Audible books is much much more user friendly. Will continue to use though as Chirp does have better sales at times than Audible.
I've used Chirp for 5 years now, & give 5 stars for their audiobook selection, useful filters, prices that often beat audible, and best of all, frequent sales of very good titles for under $5. But app itself is 3 stars at best. Frequently freezes after pausing to use another app & return. Then you lose your place because it goes back to beginning of section when you re-open. Using downloaded books offline (no data/wifi) it sometimes stops working, so you can't access books until back in range
it says it has free audiobooks so I got it! I opened the app, made an account and I went to try to look for a book! immediately it took me to a webpage and I got excited, I was thinking "omg I'm about to have so many free audiobooks to listen to", but there wasn't a single one that was free. I don't think it would have been a bad app but I'm just saying.. that's false advertising.
Running in the background, this sucked up 76% of my battery. No audio was playing. Also, sometimes when I reopen the app after it's stopped playing from the sleep timer, the play button doesn't work. The playback time for the chapter resets. I have to hard close the app to get it to play again. I use this a lot with a sleep timer, and I think that might be related to my issues.
it took a while before i realized i had to turn my volume in the car all the way up. i was unable to get any sound. I dont have a CD player in my car and i wanted to listen to a book when traveling. So i downloaded to my phone and bluetooth to the car. once i figured out the sound issue i was good to go. I do with you would make a note when you sell a series of books which is the first second third etc in the series. i was disappointed when i listened to the 3rd one first.
this app doesn't keep track of where I left off, locks up half the time I try to resume, and doesn't always save bookmarks I use to compensate for the problem, and doesn't always play at the speed I like. it takes far too much effort to conveniently listen to audiobooks. on the up side, I use it to listen in my car
My initial experience was a unique disappointment. Perhaps I chose a freshman novel for my free sample but I cannot recommend this app. I had hoped for another addition to my Kindle tablets but it turned out to work only on my android phone. And while I did manage to finish my novel, it took forever as my interest was smashed by the dull-reading, mispronouncing AI voice. Sad to lose twice with a first trial.
I do like having the Chirp option of listening to audiobooks, however I do see a couple of glitches that I find kind of irritating. When I go to my Bluetooth in my car it seems to have a hard time connecting if I am by another business where it connects to their Wi-Fi. To remedy this, I have to hit the 15-second reverse, however this seems to take you 15 MINUTES backwards, not 15 seconds. Thank you for your review.
i listen to audio books while i am at work, i work 12 hour shifts, so i go through a ton of books. this app has a great selection of discounted books that are great stories, and then there are bestsellers, most at regular price. the app is easy to navigate and i haven't had one issue so far. great app and service!
Just finished my first audiobook! I love that the prices are so reasonable, and it has a simple interface. I like how customizable the listening speed is. I did notice a glitch, when switching to car mode, the play/pause isn't tappable until I restart the app. Other than that, no complaints! Looking forward to future listens on this app.
The audiobooks are very reasonable and the sound quality and features are just as good as Audible by Amazon. I've been using Chirp Audiobooks for 5 years now. I've bought over 300 audiobooks from them. However, I want to say that the app is not very user friendly. It takes a long time to load the audiobook before you can listen to it. And, it's not efficient in saving your place, so you must always bookmark where you left off.
I had this as 3 stars for the last couple of years due to playback problems. But the recent update seems to have finally fixed that issue! I can now stop and close the app, and it remembers my place when I start up again. It now works as seamlessly as Libby. And I love the availability of the audio books and the very good sale prices. Thanks to the developer for fixing this. And it supports Android Auto again too.
I love this app. It has a wide variety of books you can choose from at usually the same cost or less than other places. There's no membership fee. You can either listen on the cloud or you can download the book. They have deals where you can get books at a discount and sometimes free. They also have a wishlist. My only cons are that you can't make folders to organize your books and you can't zoom in to see the cover for the visually impaired.
