Great concept, but it missed the mark for me. I don't need help reading labels - I was looking for help identifying alpha gal allergens in restaurants where ingredients are harder to identify and the data was wrong. Menu items I know are safe were labeled unsafe (NBD) but mostly there was just no info at all. Also, the setup was lengthy and forces you to pick from sets of options to personalize your experience but there's no N/A, so I had to make stuff up just to get to the next screen.
Reviews for Fig: Food Scanner & Discovery
← Back to Fig: Food Scanner & DiscoveryI love this app!!! I have a lot of dietary restrictions, and even with putting in what I can't have, I still find delicious food that I can eat. I 1000% percent recommend this app. It has recently started closing out for no reason when I try to get into the app to do anything, and it also lags, so I'm not sure it if needs an update because I check in the play store, and it doesn't indicate that it needs an update, but this app still gets 5 stars.
Was looking for an easy way to search for FODMAP content in common foods. In the five minutes I was able to use the app, there was no easy way I could find without manually creating a sensitivity for every food. Then it kicked me out and tried to force me to register. Why would I give my contact information just to get food info? Especially when getting that food info seems cumbersome. App uninstalled, mandatory subscription cancelled. This feels like a data grab and a scam.
Finally, we are able to go grocery shopping in a quarter of the time it used to take. I have an allergy to an ingredient that causes anaphylaxis. It is in everything from medicine, some frozen foods, fresh foods, baked goods, it can be in anything and everything. We dreaded grocery shopping. My husband and I downloaded the app, surprised that the ingredient was already an option. Looking forward to more restaurants being added. We have been recommending this app to everyone.
The app uses a surprisingly large amount of mobile data, I might ditch it for that alone. I think this app is too sensitive for people with IBS and intolerances because it will flag ingredients even in tiny amounts. It is out of date for some products that frequently change their ingredients. Free scans are very limited after your first days. I do find it useful to find which products are safer than others for me, but the search feature mostly lists stuff not available in my region.
I've had this app for less than a week, and it was great at first, but then it started crashing. It worked fine the first 5 days of my free trial, but on the 6th day, it kept shutting down shortly after opening the app. I cleared the cache, uninstalled and reinstalled, and updated the app, and it still is not working properly. I was excited to use this app to help with an allergy I have, but I will no longer be using the app since it continually crashes every time I open it.
was not useful. suggested restaurants and groceries against my many dietary restrictions. I know I have a very limited number of things I can consume, but I thought this app would help me find items that worked with all of my restrictions. For example, it suggested a sushi place as a 100% match when I can't eat crustacean and have GERD... the rolls that didn't have crab or shrimp were spicy... not worth the time filling out restrictions or preferences.
I absolutely love this app! Earlier this year it was confirmed that gluten needed to be omitted from my diet. I have other restrictions also so FIG is perfect for me. I input my restrictions, etc. and when I scan items at the grocery store or at home I am alerted if the item is safe or if I need to futher research. Oh! I also use the scan function while shopping online. If an item that I am interested in purchasing has a visible bar code the scanner works when I scan it from my laptop screen! 👍
Update 8/2: sent a new email. STILL haven't heard back from customer service! The app has not allowed me to sign in since I downloaded it. There is an error every time. I contacted their customer service and have yet to hear back. I better not be charged when I can't even get in for the free trial!
I truely like Fig but I have a s22 ultra with a very good processor and plenty of ram, and yet this app crashes constantly. like every 30 seconds of browsing through my dietary options. the app itself would be and is extremely helpful, visually its good looking and easy to navigate and impressive at deciphering so many different diets and restrictions, but its useless if i can't keep it open. I hope this app gets more development and is stable, but until then I can't recommend it. i
I'm loving the app. I've been gf for 1.5 yrs and still learning. I use it mainly when I'm grocery shopping if I'm unsure if something is safe for me since gluten is a huge no for me. I love the store filter to make it easy to search thru what's already been added to the shopping tab when I'm making my shopping list. I definitely recommend the app to anyone new to a special diet or even those that have multiple restrictions since you can tailor your profile to your specific shopping needs.
it should be a beta app. I ran into multiple errors using this on an Android device. I do not recommend. also, the $50 charge billed as 416 a month is kind of misleading. no I wasn't charged. I canceled it the day I signed up. more research and development seems is needed. The app also failed to locate a popular meat from boars head.
Fig has been transformative by helping me understand my food choices much better. Shopping takes a fraction of the time, I can enjoy a full diet again. The app only lagged when it needed an update, so that may be what the other users were experiencing. The customer service is also superior to any app I have dealt with. I did not mean to renew at full price and was given a full refund with absolutely NO hassle. Wonderful app, wonderful people. Thank you, Virna, for great customer service.
App constantly crashes!! I would give this app 20 stars if it didn't always crash on me. I paid $50 for the subscription and I can't even use the app..... The app was very helpful with my Alph gal to see what I could and couldn't have. I have a brand new android phone, I would think it is the phones fault, none of my other apps crash like this. it is extremely frustrating.
I normally love Fig. I pay for the full subscription as I struggled to find food within my dietary needs. being able to search for things I was curious about or scan items I had in front of me were both wonderful tools. I have had Fig for a few years now and rarely had issues. Now, it crashes constantly. I can't sneak a search or scan in before it crashes. I deleted the app and re-downloaded in hopes that would help. However, now It crashes before I can log back in. Subscription canceled........
I've used this app intermittently for over a year. Sometime within the last few months, it's started crashing as soon as I open it - I was able to do a search *once* successfully the other day after several attempts, but now it's completely unusable. Clicking on anything closes the app immediately. I've tried clearing cache, restarting my phone, reinstalling, and it still crashes. I don't understand how an app that worked fine for so long is suddenly so unstable.
It's probably the best scanner on the market for food allergies and I appreciate how thorough it is I made a mistake with my initial setup of my profile and no matter how many times I try to fix it it gets stuck on Step 2 and 3. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app 3 or 4 times to no avail. Edit 8/8/25 still has the same issues. shut down my phone out of all apps, audio, and even fig itself when I was trying to edit a profile and add a new one. such a bummer because it has great potential
There are definitely good features within the app. It's a lot easier to find my obscure food sensitivity here since most ingredients lists put mine under catch-all term "spices." The app, however, is very annoying to navigate. It lags and freezes constantly, making it a pain to use. It cooks my battery, and my phone gets really hot when I use it. It also prompts me to spend money almost constantly. Some of the restrictions for the premium seem pretty absurd to me, too. Optimization needed.
The app is great, however, it crashes A LOT and lags as well. Now that I'm no longer on the low iodine diet and can resume my normal vegetarian diet, I kept trying to add/change it to vegetarian. It crashes everytime I try to edit anything and ends up not saving or getting far enough to save it. I paid the $50/year, I just wish it didn't have these glitches, otherwise, it is a great app and helped me when I had to be on the low iodine diet.
App forces you to jump through a ton of hoops before it tells you that you only get a 7 day free trial before you then have to pay for a subscription. I'm so sick of companies wasting our time with tactics like this as if we have the extra time to waste. Especially since in order for apps like this to be successful they need people actually using it and posting. They don't even bother telling you the price either, so you know it's unreasonably expensive.
