Reviews for Learn to Read - Duolingo ABC

← Back to Learn to Read - Duolingo ABC

Biggest issue is that it needs to let kids keep trying to write instead of switching it to auto-line mode when they don't get it after two tries. Kids need 5 or 6 tries. They won't learn as well in auto line mode. This also needs to have all the alphabet letters to practice writing, and possibly words they could practice writing, as well. lesson labels would be nice. My kids respond really well to the "put the word back together" game, but they don't have that often. I'd recommend it so far.

My daughter is 3 1/2 years old and has been using this app for about a year (it's less of a headache to have her play "her games" in the car rather than listening to kids' songs/nursery rhymes all the way to our destination). Today she casually walked up to me with a book and STARTED READING IT TO ME! She was pointing to the words that she was reading and sounding out some of the bigger words! The kicker is, we just bought said book last night and haven't read any of it to her yet! Get this Ap

Amazing app for young kids! My daughter began kindergarten this year. We've been doing a few lessons every night and I'm shocked by how much she's picked up! Almost three months in class and she wasn't sounding out words yet, but 4 days with this app and she's picking up words from books she's sounded out herself. I also love that it's ad-free and simple to use.

Great app like duolingo, just one problem, which is why I rated it 4 stars. Duolingo ABC is mainly targeted towards younger children, I thought it would help with my English in high school, but it mainly teaches you basic English. I guess it helps to stop making small mistakes, but if an upgraded version of this app came out with certain stages for certain year groups, it would help me much more with my grammar and English if it fits my year group. Otherwise, amazing app! ★

It's amazing 😍😍🤩 my little brother has very week in study but now he know to much things and I am also learning english my english is improving thankyou Duolingo thank you very much 😀😀😀

My 4yo granddaughter LOVES this app. She always asks to "play the green owl game". I noticed a very quick improvement in her lowercase letter recognition (which is often ignored in learning, for some reason). The app doesn't have any negative reinforcement - all positive. It's very encouraging and allows exploration. The humor is perfect for her age, and she repeats the stories over and over. She loves the characters and likes to play pretend with them.

It's okay, but unfortunately there's no option to switch from US english to UK English, so at school, children would be considered to be misspelling words like colour. I think it would be great if there were options to switch to UK or Australian English. I enjoy that you can skip to higher levels without needing to complete the lower levels

My son, who has just turned 4, enjoys it for a little bit of reading each day. It's very good, I only have 2 criticisms. 1. The difficulty level progresses a little bit too slowly. It's good to start with basics but he gets bored when it remains easy for too long. 2. There is no option to make it British English, so it spells some of the words the American way, which would be deemed incorrect here.

App is great! It has a nice style and is simple, so kids can use it easily. No ads too! Though it would be very nice if you'd add some other languages. Also, one small thing that is a bit annoying, is that sometimes the voice gets a bit buggy. Like, whenever it teaches you a letter, the sound gets quieter in the middle of the sound, which isn't a major mistake, but it is a bit annoying, for me, at least. I'm a 13 year old trying this out btw, so idk how younger kids would like the app.

My child learns much faster than before . Before she was always watching phone but now she is on the app Duolingo only learning.

Best free educational children's app I've found. Can't believe it's totally free (and no ads)! My almost 3 year old loves it and can do it mostly independently, even when she gets it wrong, because it makes each question easier to answer if you select the wrong thing. It's the only alphabet/phonics app I've found that keeps her engaged for a while. She loves the stories and the speaking tasks. Wish there was a British English option though.

Free app, no adds, and my kid ASKS to play this game! Couldn't ask for a better reading resource!

such a great app My only complaint is I wish it was available on the Smart board! This game helps my child find joy in learning and connecting to new explorations in learning.

telling them the names of the sound for spelling makes it harder. it should be the lower case letters represent the sound and uppercase the name. the concept and layout is very good but this can make spelling harder for children.

Prolly not the place for this question 🤣 but my 3 year old was wondering if you guys could update the Duo ABC- so the letters when being traced could make the sound of the letter instead of sensory noise. Thanks! He loves the app its helped him sm. Just passing the request along!

I'm actually using the iOS version of the app, but my points should still be applicable. The kids and I love the app. However, I'm working with kids who are non-native speakers, and the repeat-the-sentence stories can be quite difficult for them, especially when there is no on-demand option to repeat the sentence (if I try to model it, the device registers my speech and checks it off). It'd be great if that option is added in future updates. Thanks!

My 2.5 yr old loves playing "owl school" Some of the lessons are a little advanced for her, and I help talk her through them, but she has learned so much! I was looking for something because she is really interested in letters and points out all the T's, etc, in her books, but would often mix up similar looking letters. Perfectly expected, but she loves learning with Duo. I love that it's free and ad free. I'm sure by the time she's more in the target age range, she will be learning even more.

Our son just turned 5 and he is already reading well, far better than most 6 year olds. He can often read words up to 10 characters long, sometimes longer. Here's the thing: nobody has taught him to read. The only logical deduction is that he's learned from this app, which he's done a fair amount and enjoys, though sporadically (once every 2 - 3 weeks?). The only other possibility is that he taught himself to read. He's only reached Level 5 (of 10) on the app. An unbelievably amazing app!

This has been amazing so far for my 3yo! I love the variations in exercises, and she gets so excited to keep learning. One thing that's kind of annoying is that when tracing the letters, it'll sometimes skip ahead in the path so my 3yo isn't actually tracing ('m' for example, she doesn't have to finish the bumps down to the bottom before it registers as going up again). I'd rather she not be learning those loopholes lol but it's been so good otherwise that we'll definitely keep using it.

I'm a youth programmer at a large library system & a parent to a preschooler. I love this app. My preschooler is completely engaged and loves it. It's a perfect balance of stories, writing, learning to sound out letters/words and sight words. I can't wait to watch her progress through more levels. We finish level 1 in the first weekend. I've been telling all the caregivers at my programs about this app. I'm hoping you make ones for learning other languages too. Thanks for being ad free!
