A full-featured audiobook player. One of the few pieces of *non*-open source software I have on my device. (The open source audiobook player choices are more limited. If you have very basic needs, then the open source Voice is probably ok.) The other (non-open source) audiobook player which seems good is Smart AudioBook Player, which I also like a lot. Where Listen has a definite edge is that not only does it play Opus, but it knows how to interpret *chaptered* Opus files.
Reviews for Listen Audiobook Player
← Back to Listen Audiobook PlayerLove this app. Works great for all audiobooks. Super easy to use. I came here to look for pro version to throw a couple bucks to developers. Am writing a review because I can only find the free version. Edit- I forgot I already bought this. Thought it was free (memory is the 2nd thing to go), love it so much I wanted to pay for it. Had to be reminded by the developer I already paid for it. Leaving my original review because I think it gets across how much I like and use this app. Worth the $
I have used this app every single day for the past ~5 years, it has all of the features I absolutely need in an audiobook player. I do wish it had some sort of integration with Goodreads, so books that are on my shelf get marked "read" when I complete an audiobook- but I dont even know if a feature like that is possible.
This app is a true gem for audiobook lovers. It just works — no unnecessary ads, no complications, no glitches. I set up my main folder with books, the app automatically detected the structure, remembers progress for each book, and gives me full control over what, when, and how I want to listen. It works like an old, reliable Mercedes E300 diesel — maybe not flashy, but stable, elegant, and always gets you where you need to go. If you’re looking for a simple, paid app that won’t let you down,
It has a nice interface and lots of configurable options, but there are a few quirks in the audio tags handling. I like the library browser from Smart Audiobook Player better. It would be great to have more flexibility on the audio tags shown in the library browser. E.g. album, title, artist, year, comments, custom tags, etc. And then, being able to filter on these...
I like it, you can pick up where you left off on another device, the rewind time is the best it let's me keep listening without having to rewind it myself to remember what was going on. the only thing missing is the ability to rescan your folder for new books when you add them to an already full library. I don't delete my books when I'm done I leave them in case I want to re-listen to them.
No longer accesses it's library as of 5/25/19. screen goes to black, app locks up. Reinstall dosen't help....... That worked, pity to lose my bookmarks but great appreciation for your incredibly fast response. "Developer response: If you grant write access to your SD card, by pressing the red SD card next to the library path in the library choose, then bookmark and position data will be saved with the book and will be restored if you ever need to reinstall in the future." That... is great!!
Definetly worth the price. It allows me to listen to audio book files from librivox, overdrive, and other apps, and restores chapters to files that are split up. It allows speed manipulation up to 4x, bookmarking, and EQing the track. The only feature I wish it had is noise reduction (mainly because librivox has poor recording quality, not because the app has issues)
This app has everything I want in an audiobook player, it's fantastic. The only thing about it I'd change is to make the bookmark feature record the previous 30 seconds of audio when you hit the bookmark button rather than recording the upcoming audio since I'm usually wanting to bookmark something I just heard. All round great app! Edit: the developer just let me know that's actually a feature that's already in the app. Great app and great developer, would highly recommend!
The most usable app I've experienced for audio books. It has so many features that seem obvious once you see them, but I've never seen in other audio book apps (like updating the time remaining in the book/chapter based on the playback speed, or being able to select multiple file locations to search for audio books). I'm a huge fan. My only request is for audio casting support, so I can listen to my books on a Google home or cast enabled speakers ! Hopefully a future update will have this!
Recently set up my Plex to handle Audiobooks and needed a way to listen to them on my phone. Took me a minute to figure out how to get the Plex integration to work (If you click Book Download at the bottom, Plex is one of the options), and emailed support (Got a response in minutes! Which was AWESOME!). Anyways, super awesome app, well worth the $2 price!
PRAISE for my main go to app! I have many audio files-books, lectures, language learning, etc. separated from music. If I could only have 5 apps to my phone this is 1. Very INTUITIVE. Perhaps a most important function is a persistent timer (which need not be used). I rarely listen to speech non-stop. Especially not if soon to sleep. LABP has never failed. Other apps have talked into my dreams-disturbing. Editable bookmarks. Very customizable. Developer has always responded & solved a problem.
Update: I sent an email to the dev asking for m4b speed up and now two weeks later... It's here. Seriously this is the audiobook app you are looking for. I wanted to find a good audiobook player and tried most of them. Most were too expensive for what they provided and the interface was too busy. Listen is the best one for the best price. It gives me speed control and awesome media management. Highly recommended you give it a try.
I've tried several paid and free audiobook players to listen to use while commuting. All have ranged from missing just a couple features to horrible. Listen Audiobook Player is perfect. The ability to adjust not one but two separate skip buttons is reason enough to pay for this. It has every feature I've been missing. The only missing feature was custom actions for the headset button BUT, the developer even made custom actions for the headset button!!! This is awesome. I'm seriously impressed.
This app is great; I use it a lot. It does a good job of keeping track of where I'm at in each book. I haven't tried the sync function as I use it from my phone and Bluetooth to various devices. I very much like the configurability- it almost reminds me of CoolReader for ebooks, which I consider a compliment (though CoolReader is even more configurable). I do very much wish this app had a volume leveler or similar function, as i sometimes use for audio where the volume varies a good bit.
Latest update just broke this app for me. It won't let me use the audiobook folder I've been using for years. And no explanation for what changed or why. Update: Since I first started using Listen years ago, I have been using a folder I created for my audiobooks. A few days after I left the above review, the app started working again. Still annoyed that there was no explanation in the app, and no error message explaining what needed to be done. Otherwise, still a great app.
I have been using this app for over 8 years at this point, and I'm still a big fan. However, I'd like to ask the author if it would be possible to upgrade the Android Auto mode to include a Library mode where I can browse my books by Author - I have long running shows (>200 episodes per show) that I like to listen to and if I have even a fraction of my episodes (>5000 in total) on my phone, selecting anything in the car is almost impossible (besides "newly added").
Wonderful app. If you JUST need an audiobook player that isn't tied to a specific ecosystem like Audible or Google (annoyingly hard to find), this is well worth the asking price. Im so glad I took the plunge on this Edit: went back to audible for a book, and I sorely missed this app. Def my go to audiobook app from now on. Ive listened to 3 different books, and a couple of podcasts on here. All I gotta do is move the files to my phone and im golden.
needs to have the ability to have a constant quiet sound to keep some Bluetooth speakers from clipping the start of words at the start of paragraphs (Smart Audiobook Player implemented this years ago, and speakers I just got are having a "power saving" issue with that). otherwise this is the standard by which I judge all other audiobook apps.
First off, I've been using the Listen Audiobook Player for years and I love it. Best player out there and I've tried them all. Great job! Now for some suggestions on the few minor things that frustrate me :) 1. Please provide more flexibility in the library list view. Audiobooks can have tags that are needed to easily find the books in large libraries. I would like to be able to a) reduce/change the font size in the list, b) add certain tags to the list view (series, author/artist).
