Has lots of cards and very intuitive. You would think a person could search and view the new set All will be one but only 5 cards show up. Add simple set search check boxes for standard. These are the cards you are selling, so why not make it easy? I hope someone from WOTC readd this. Back to browsee bases searching I guess. Might even uninstall. Ill use it for other sets before then, like Kamigawa.
Reviews for Magic: The Gathering Companion
← Back to Magic: The Gathering CompanionWorks well most the time. They have all the functions you might want for playing a few games of magic, and it is an improvement to their last lgs options. However, the app has major glitches and has kicked multiple people out of logging in. The logging in problems can last for months, and it seems down for at least a tenth of the players in any given week. Working out the bugs is a must.
Works Sometimes like intended, my biggest current issue is no matter how good my internet connection is or how long I wait for it to load in, while Advance Searching, I try to choose a subtype after selecting creature supertype and it just doesn't load anything, then if I use the search bar to "search" for a subtype, it just does nothing and so I have to thumb through an endless screen of things I don't care about, all because your advance search function stopped working properly. Fix please!
This is useful for joining in-store events, and it has a decent life tracker. The cards search function is useless. I've reached out to the developers, but they felt it was more important to explain how to use search functions to me. If you're deck building, don't use this app. If you're playing, tracker's ok. If you're playing in an event, you have no choice.
Not as robust as online searches. The advanced search is really lacking in filter options, and it makes it almost unbearable to use. When I look up cards online, it'll suggest using this app, but the web page versions have way more information than the app, so why would it suggest it when it's inferior? For example, we should be able to keyword search from any of the written text, besides flavor text, on any card from any series without having to be exact, like you can on Arena's search.
The app almost does it all! Though for some reason, I can't favorite cards or place them in folders to help with deck building. Once I search or find a card, there's no way to save it for later! That simple feature would be insane, honestly. Especially if I could save them in folders so I could have my decks loaded/saved on here. I can't stress how much more valuable that would make this app!
Very useful, but most of the double sided cards are hidden because they choose to show you the extra art. There are no links or hints as to what is on the back of these cards and when you want to build these decks, you must use a different app. One would think someone could have fixed this by now?! Also this app has many other features that most people don't use, it would be amazing to open to the card search default (or be able to choose) and not have to find and select it every time.
It has been kinda useful when i want to look up cards. Even then it's not very good. Doesn't show all options so i have to double check whenever in front of a computer. Checking the rules for how some cards work has been the only other useful thing and, just lke the card search, it has some annoying bugs. The rulings almost always, if not 100% of the time, appear twice under the card. Could be much better.
Weak app with few features. Setting up events is awkward. There are zero lifetime stats. No ability to track what one drafted or head to head match ups. Events are deleted quickly so it hard to see how you did. The ranking system for multiple pod limited is cryptic and does't update until a round ends. Zero features added in over a year. Stores can barely use the app. In short, a typical WOTC forray into technology. But hey, at least they haven't added Achemy to this app, so that's something!
Gatherer kept pestering me saying it was a better experience in the app, but it's demonstrably worse, to the point where the same search yields different results! It also takes forever to load a single "page" of like six or eight cards, whereas the Gatherer website will instantly spit out dozens of results at the same time. I bet the app is useful in other ways, but I literally only downloaded it because of advertising that it was a better way to use Gatherer, and that's all I need, so 1 star.
The life counter is nice, but this recent update messed up the advanced card search. Instead of the handy drop down menu for searching card type, you now have to type in the type. Which would be fine, but it doesn't work. It will not add the type to the search at all. Edit: Problem was resolved, then showed up again.
I have downloaded and re-installed this app 3 times now. Each time it won't allow me to register an account. I fill in all my information and then when I hit submit, nothing happens. Not even a buffering circle. The button just doesn't work. Happened on my cousin's phone too. I finally went online to register an account thinking I could log in on the app. Nope. When I entered my email and password and hit "log in" nothing happened again! App is pointless.
The app is handy, though the ad for it on the card database using Chrome (Android) can lock the page until you delete the tab. Not being able to see the opposite side of modal cards can be a pain to manually search for the other side. It would be nice to have a "card storage" area if you spy cards you like and mark them, so you can see them later. Maybe have an 'add' mark in the top-right corner of the card in the list viewer to add them to the 'card storage' box.
Life tracker works fine, but there are countless options for life tracking, no app needed. The card database would be amazing if it ever worked. It only ever comes up with "no cards found" when there are definitely cards to be found. I have to continue to use gatherer on mobile, which is unpleasant. If the database actually worked in the app, it would be amazing. But it doesn't, so its bad.
Im leaving this review as more of a bug report. The ui is fine, tracks what you need. Life tallies can be a bit cramped but I have a small phone so take that with a grain of salt. The main issue is that some cards don't pop up under certain filters. One that comes to mind is if you search for creatures with toughness 10+, cards like pride of hull clade dont appear. If they fix that, the card search will be perfect, but for the time being, if it can't do what it is set out to do, use another app.
Has potential. But needs to fix the getting logged out constantly. That and lots of all crashes lose life total in the middle of a game so it can't be relied on. I'd rather have the app stable first before worrying about searching for cards in the app. Having a record of event records in app would be nice to see history even if it's local only. Would also be nice to have a nickname option rather than having to change account name. This coming from someone who has been a long time magic player.
I like how it works. However, the only thing I use it for is the card database and my issues are with it. Some of the cards have the wrong picture with them, and half the double face cards don't "flip" and it is very delayed when new sets come out. I end up just using the website. The idea is great, execution is lacking.
Really only useful for getting into events. The database search tool isn't great and works terribly for double-sided cards. The built-in life counter is also inconvenient and does not handle counters very well (poison, commander damage, etc). For a way to find and connect with local events, Companion works fine, but for anything else, it's less than ideal.
On the one hand, having everything in one place is pretty cool. On the other... how hard is it to keep you logged in? I draft almost every week in my local store. I have to log into the app at least 2-3 times a night, for one event. Today it logged me out as I was reporting a match (twice). Any other app on my phone? I log in once. Period. Unless I go months without using it or actively choose to log out. Event UX needs a lot of work just due to this "feature".
It works sometimes. Auto logs you out at random intervals during tournaments, sometimes kicks you from events for no reason. However, the commander life total app is fantatic. Genuinely the best way to track life these days. For that alone it could be 5 stars. Unfortunately the app doesn't do what it is supposed to, which is be a companion app for *events*
