It's great until unit 5. The translations disappear for better "immersion". It stops being that when I have to identify the new character/word, copy it, put it in Google translate, then pray it's correct. I'm not good at figuring out what concepts/verbs the pictures are trying to communicate. Once I know what the picture is supposed to be, it's very effective.
Reviews for Rosetta Stone: Learn, Practice
← Back to Rosetta Stone: Learn, PracticeIf what you are looking for is immersion, this is perfect. There is nothing in English, there are no hard and fast rule explanations, there is no means vocabulary. It's just pictures, and words/phrases, and you figure it out intuitively. This is now how I learn. I need rules and structure, and reasons for the way things conjugate or hard definitions for the words. Everyone learns differently. This is good for what it is.
I want to enjoy the app and learning new languages, but it refuses to hear me speak. One minute everything is going really well, then all of a sudden I get back to back "we can't hear you". Please fix the app. Edit: PC/browser don't seem to have nearly this much trouble, but that's a frustrating and less portable alternative. Edit: Almost 2025, 2 new phones and 3 headphones later, this issue still exists. I don't think the Android app will ever be viable. Uninstall/reinstall is so tedious.
This is a pretty good system. My biggest complaint is that there aren't any grammar explanations, it's all just from immersion. And as someone who has learned a foreign language before, I know to be looking for certain things. But I was still struggling with some rules, and I had to google them. Overall, the voice recognition is pretty good, occasionally it struggles. Sometimes there are speech bubbles, and I can't tell who it's pointing to. Overall good.
I am a fan of the app, and I enjoy using it to learn language, although it can be somewhat stern. But suddenly the app won't open. It just sits on the opening screen and doesn't load the language learning content. I tried clearing the cache after a few tries, but that hasn't yielded success either. Until they fix this error, I can't give any higher than 1 star to an app that doesn't work.
To start off, I'm a paid member. I'm trying to learn Mandarin. It pretty much throws you in head first. You go from trying to figure out boy and man to a group of men, to the men are running. No pronunciation explanation or anything. There are no simple basics, and it can be very frustrating. I don't know what I'm reading or how to say correctly what it is wanting me to say. like 😵💫
Do NOT use for Arabic. It incorrectly adds random endings to basic words. I brought this problem up with the support team, and they said all I could do was send screenshots of the issues for them to pass along to the developers, and MAYBE they would fix it for the next update... I know enough of the language to know most of the basic words it was butchering, but I verified with my native Arabic speaking spouse, who confirmed that in no context or dialect would those endings ever exist.
I've been using this app for about a month now. After using a certain other app 🦉 for well over a year. I really enjoy this app alot! It fits well with my learning style. There is only one thing that bugs me, I would like to have the vocabulary and pronunciation on words before going into the actual lessons:) Other than that, I absolutely love this app🥰 (I'm an English speaker learning Japanese.)
I rate this app five stars because, this. app is fun, and not only fun, what helps. build up motivation, to learn the. language, I plan to move to Korea, so this will definitely help with, me learning Korean fluently, it's easy to use, helps you. and gives you hints, so that way you understand. I love this app because it also, has other. languages as well. so if you want to. learn other languages, thank you come to this app. it is pretty good to use! definitely would recommend. go to friends!
I really like the app. It is a good way of learning. The focus on pronunciation is very helpful. I have two thoughts on what I don't like. First, it takes too long between reading and speaking. They read it, pause, I read it, pause, ding got it right. Those pauses are just too long. Second, it is a very clinical methodology. Great in some ways not great in others. I little life couldn't hurt. A little life couldn't hurt. Friends list, competition, trophies, etc. Balance clean learning and life.
I have heard many great things, and I wanted to learn Latin. I googled if it was an option and it said yes. When I got the app, I found that Latin is not an option. One star lost, but that is ok. Upon further research, I found that the only language that is not on the app but is advertised is Latin. It doesn't feel right to put 3 stars on an app with this amazing reputation.
At first it seemed to easy. Then after it got more challenging, it seemed as if I wasnt retaining the information. It also seemed to give words or phrases sometimes that would be shown little and i wondered if i could remember them. Then after awhile it all started to come together. I started to see how the lessons were built to learn. I did miss almost a year and was surprised at what i actually retained when i got back to it.
This app really helps you learn without feeling too repetitive or exhausting. It pairs nicely with the daily lesson plans available on their website as well, so I do those in the evening from my computer and I use the app on my lunch break at work. The only thing I wish they'd change is how the text displays work: chiefly making the current word, syllable, or Kana (I'm studying Japanese), light up in sync to the narration. That would really help both listening and reading comprehension.
There's no placement test for users and the app starts training from the middle of nowhere without considering your prior knowledge even in Basic section. Downloaded files are deleted after 30 days for no good reason. We download because we can use it where and when a network connection is unavailable not when we're connected. The app size is very large and not optimized. The price is high. The speed of training and exercises are high that you can't even focus on vocabulary and keep it in mind.
Direct language immersion is great so far, it feels like great practice for a beginner, but it often feels like the lessons are too structured and I struggle to pay attention. I still haven't found the exact fit I need for me, as I have tried four different language learning apps so far. One of them was well beyond what I've learned (AI driven), and with the others I struggle to keep my already limited attention span (ADHD), or they feel really basic. This one is Ok, it just drains my dopamine.
The overall learning experience is great, but when I try to buy a lifetime membership, the website sends me immediately to the app. When I try to purchase through the app, it gives an error message. It winds up a vicious cycle, as I can't purchase through the app, and the website keeps sending me to the app. Very annoying.
Wish I could get my 100 dollars back. Got this for Japanese, but honestly Duolingo is better even with the obnoxious ads. They quiz you on words they never teach you the meaning of, they don't teach you what the characters mean (there's 3 different alphabet), they use kanji and never explain them, etc etc. It's poorly done and you don't learn much even when you get it right.
Only on the 3rd lesson but I do feel like I'm learning. The voice recognition could probably use a little more refinement because it gave me a good score on some pronunciations I feel I butchered and a failing score on some I feel I did good on. Maybe that's just me though. Time will tell over the coming weeks and months.
Problem I tend to have with most language apps is they tend to move too quickly and do a poor job of continually reinforcing previous lessons. This is no different. I find the progression format frustrating. The pronunciation portion is terrible, failing to recognize even a single character sound in Japanese for example. I used the PC version 20 years ago and it felt dated then. This app feels like that 20+ yo version. Already paid for lifetime access but I'll likely get a refund. This isn't it
great for learning languages. Takes some getting use to, like clicking translate instead of wondering if it's "a, the, he/she" especially when they each have their own feminine and male versions plus singular and plural uses which change the pronunciation. starting to think in other languages using this app which is necessary for fluency. wish they had ASL since it's so needed for so many, but it's useful in video form more than snaps. Wonder if they'd add Bill Vicars series. lifetime membership
