Minimal ads, and the free push notifications are quite nice. Edit: The banner ad has been moved to the top of the UI, which makes it 100x times more intrusive in a god damn reading app where most of the time in bed you're looking at the top of the page content to read anything. For the love of God move the banner ad back to the bottom. Going back to web, I ain't having an ad that's plastered at the top of the screen even while scrolling.
Reviews for Royal Road - Read Stories
← Back to Royal Road - Read Stories3/5 good stories, easy to use, pretty good TTS, went premium (awesome), used for 5+ years. But Moderators struggle. I found a great text expander that also does auto calc (great for game lit). Use it in job. Love it. Become a affiliate. Start sharing it with favorite authors on RR. Think to self, "why not share with more ppl? (but not more than once, don't want to be annoying)". Got banned for months. No warning, 0 previous infractions (that I can remember). Decided that RR isn't for me.
This is a perfect translation to an app that I've ever seen. It works functionally the exact same as their webpage. Often times new apps add extra ads or things like that and nothing like that has happened here. I notice the ads a little more but that is probably because my screen is smaller. I can read all the books I was. It is even greater than the webpage because it picks up where you left off in the book you left off in and sometimes even remembers where I was in the chapter. Great app!!!
It's not very intuitive. If I was a new reader who stumbled onto this app I would be turned off by how to get around. EX: having to click on the fiction tab to go to the book page, then you have to scroll to the very bottom to add it to a list. Everything is just hard to find. Rename the "fiction" tab so it's more obvious it's going to the book page so that new users know what that is. And the app crashes CONSTANTLY. But other than that it's nice
The app has its benifits, but I'd honestly stick to the site for now. The UI and the dictionary are great, I'd like to go in more detail, but alas, too few characters. But the problem is that in every other way the app is worse, the constant advertisement in the bottom of the screen and the fact you can only have one page open at a time combine to make both finding something to read and reading it worse than the site. I would advise specalizing one to find stories and the other to read them
It's okay. The interface is a bit better than the mobel web, but I will probably stick to the web version for now. It has to do with how I leave a finger on the screen when not scrolling. I kept accidently opening the dictionary. I have the same problem with making highlights on the Kindle app. Can we get a setting to turn that off? Edit: They turned off animated adds which is less distracting than before when reading.
Simple, fast, and easy to navigate. All the important features from the site, but not bloated with features you'll never use. The devs from Royal Road nailed it with this app! it's a great reader all around. Premium is a reasonable price, removes the ads and enables OFFLINE READING. FINALLY! Maybe I just haven't found it, but I kind of wish I could turn just the user ads back on since that's how I find half the stories I read.
honestly the best app for reading light novels, everything is free to read and it has a really nice sense of community. i would like to give a 4.5 star because there is one issue but im not going to knock it to 4 because of it. i wish the app tracked reading progress while offline. you can download chapters and read them offline but when you read the chapters in offline mode and then go back to online mode later the reading progress will be back to when you were last online. please fix
When this app first launched, it had a couple crashing bugs, but within a few weeks, all the crashing bugs I was experiencing were patched and fixed. I now use this exclusively over the webview. Royal Road is one of the original players in the Web Novel space, and is dedicated to their authors and readers alike. The home of the LitRPG genre, you'll find a wide variety of high quality stories here, all for free. Some of the most popular published books in fantasy today started here.
Love the app. Only missing one star because occasionally I can not connect to the servers, about once or twice a week. I use the app 2-3 times daily and hours at a time. adds are appropriately spaced. very rarely (like maybe twice in 6 months) do I have to change my font/background settings to read a particular selection, but authors give a heads up when that is the case.
So, until today I was planning to rate the app 5 stars. The ads have been reasonable, the search functionality extensive, and it does have a lot of good stories. Then they removed their best feature: inline edit suggestions. I was about to start putting my own story here, but maybe I'll look at other platforms instead now. Edit: the inline suggestions are back
Crashes constantly. Would be alot better once that is fixed. I would prefer to have the ads moved. I accidentally press the lower ones when attempting to use my phone buttons. Edit: The ads are now movable, which is nice. Royal Road still crashes a bit. Edit: It looks good nowadays. I don't randomly crash that much. Edit: Works much better now.
Don't bother using the app. it would not let me log in (kept getting an error mesg), and when i sent an email to get it fixed, I got an email back saying to use the web browser and just 3 or 4 word responses after that. The website works, and i look forward to getting started, but I definitely wish i had a better experience with the app and hope it gets fixed or, at the very least, they get better help for navigating how to help people use their software.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better place to read fantasy, sci-fi stories in web novel foum anywhere else! You can't write in this app though, I think they said they're going to make a separate app for us writers. Wish they'd hurry— were the one providing the content for this app in the first place. Also, the app is slow as heck and when you log in it launches a browser, I really dislike that.
they've fixed the constant log out issue, I love the app! Great app, love it use it every day but... It keeps logging me out, a lot, I have the app installed on my phone and I love to read on it, but sometimes it just shuts down, and then you have to log back in and it takes a good 5 minutes to get it running again. Not a big deal except it happens a lot, and you only get a couple chances to log in, and if you fat finger it you get locked out! Very frustrating.
I very much enjoy this app. The only problems I have is when using audio it gives me an error of not being able to load the next chapter if I don't have my phone screen on and the app in the foreground. Kind of breaks the usefulness some. Also when searching books, for example completed books it will list 488 pages to browse, but you can't jump to a page you want and essentially have to go through 300 pages to get to that page, instead of jumping to it. A little more control would be nice.
I enjoy being able to read through the stories and using this as a way to find more stories. Some things I would like to see implemented to the app would be better voices to choose from for when you have the app read to you, a way to hit next page and have the audio continue to read to you after hitting the next page instead of having to go back into the audio tab everytime, and I would like an easier way to use the app or another app that is made for authors to add/update/edit novels
I was reluctant to use this app, because the website is already convenient. But I'm pleased with it. Every time I open a story the app remembers not just what chapter I was on, but whether I'd finished the chapter and how far I'd gotten. Even if I was reading something else. It warns me if I skip ahead. For a dummy like me this has more QOL than a real book.
App has been very flaky. It also has annoying spelling mistakes ("fictions") in obvious places. Deciding to add a story to your favorites involves leaving the current page and hitting a button that doesn't make sense to me. Audio doesn't function properly: It doesn't register itself as a proper music source and so doesn't show up in Android Auto, and doesn't pause when, for instance, getting driving directions. Finally, the premium cost is way too high.
If you consume story product by the genre, this is your Ultimate Unending Smörgåsbord of free lunch. I have been surprised & captured by More than a few places the author cartoons..err, I mean ads...no. Some call them that, but I say not ads- cute little 1-4 panel cartoons that end you up at adding another story to your currently following list..Great Job... and if that's not the way it's supposed to work please don't fix mine :)
