It was very good at first. But after getting a premium account, the app started having bugs. Whatever we speak, doesn't reflect correctly in the chat. It is frustrating at times, as it gets translated into altogether a different language.
Reviews for Talkpal - AI Language Learning
← Back to Talkpal - AI Language LearningI give Talkpal 5 stars even though rarely there are errors in pronunciation of some words (in italian), and sometimes translation is not very correct (like walking (verb) translated into noun) when i am doing my homework, i read the text and then describe it in my words to get corrections, or when I do the true or false exercises. I also make it listen to audio and then discuss the topic. What is missing for me is writing exercises in the course and constant reuse of the words from prev units.
The free version, a 12 day trial, is far too locked down, pushing premium sub so none of the features can be sampled, and only 10 minutes a day. It also didn't store the feedback for review later. Take a bit more of a chance guys! I am not providing my payment information for your trial, forget it!!!
There are so many mistakes in this app, as though nobody has proofread it at all before launching. The 'deck' of words are supposed to be like flash cards, to learn vocabulary. However, the translations confusing and often wrong. Words such as 'agitate' are taught and then in a sentence its translated as 'enthusiasm', which are two different things. It's as though the app has heavily relied on Google translate, using very bizarre word patterns and no helpful explanation. A big waste of time.
It's a good app, but there are basic functional flaws for the developers to be addressed.. In sentence mode, for the last sentence it's not possible to check the pronunciation score. And in word mode, whenever the recording fails because someone or something makes a background noise, the pronunciation score goes very low and it's not possible to retake without having to repeat the full unit.. and, it would be good if we could opt the AI to read the sentences before us or not.
It sends unwanted, annoying notifications that you can't turn off to continue my streak, to do my daily lesson even after I reached my daily free limit (15 minutes). It is very annoying please fix. Otherwise works fine, the AI is alright, sometimes struggles to remember what we talked about already. Explanations of mistakes sometimes are a bit weird.
The app look fine, but after some lessons and hours you will notice that there are many points (such as word decks) where you cannot retry. That prevents you from practicing, and practice is one of the most important tool to learn. So an absolute ZERO STAR, in that aspect. Elsa, lets you retry, but it's English only. In addition to that, every time you switch to another app (a dictionary), when you com back, all your contents is lost. Even worse, it takes you to the main menu.
I think this app is a great idea and the UI is very easy to use but I don't think it's quite there yet. I'm studying a language that isn't very popular so I imagine this app is better suited for major languages. I was constantly using a different app to translate what I wanted to say then being told my grammar was wrong because my pronunciation would register as a different word. I think it's a helpful app but I certainly wouldn't spend $80+ on a year's subscription.
I've had a subscription for a while, but I rarely used it because the language learning options offered were too advanced for my level (calls, debates, etc.). I was about canceling my subscription, but then I realized that the app now has great new features for learning words, sentences, dialogues, and even a course! Thank you for the significant improvements, I will continue enjoying using it!
I finally noticed the "feedback" red dot, which is finally leting me start to learn microfragments of romanji! The proper japanese characters are useless to me at this stage of my progress. I will have to use this app every "day" for it to become useful, as each "day" is about 5 minutes of conversation only. But she remembers my name from when I last used the app many weeks ago... that part is nice!
Oh my god. Freaking amazing! Even the free version is just fantastic. I plan on getting the pro just because this is such a cool app. It's just like talking to or texting a real person, and it even lets you choose whether you want to see corrected grammar (and explanation why) so you don't feel Intimidated. I can't get over how cool this app is, and how much it's going to help me learn additional languages. Well done!
Works well sometimes. The feedback it gives me is sometimes irrelevant and has nothing to do with what I typed. It's also reall advanced and you have to know a lot even when you select level A1/A2. My biggest problem with it is that when I try to talk to it, it always has the same message: "We couldn't recignize your recording. Please try again." I've tried this on four devices and it still has the same problem. I'm not sure if my accent is just bad, or if it's the app's fault.
It works pretty good. There is a couple minor bugs though. For instance when you select some text and long hold it brings up a menu with translation, but it only translates into a few languages. There is a 'more apps' section in there thay makes it seem like you can turn on Google translate as an option, but it doesn't actually change anything when you turn it on. You still don't have access to google translate.
Not worth it! One of the first things the AI asked me was "Womit beschäftigst du dich momentan beim Deutschenlernen?" which sort of translates to "What are you currently working on while studying the Germans?" I kept going for a few days and received much more of the same kind of garbage. Mostly nonsense feedback. This app is probably best for beginners, not advanced students!
This app is a great idea in theory. It worked well when I was in the US, but when I traveled abroad to the place where this language is spoken, the app won't load over local WiFi. It only works through my terrible cell service, which effectively makes it not work either. This seemed like it would be a wonderful tool to supplement my studies while I travel, but it's useless. I regret paying for a year subscription. An expensive waste of money!
The app is great for what it does. It provides an easy way to gain conversational practice in a mew language, without worrying about mistakes. The daily life scenarios are wonderful to practice going to coffee shop, clothes shopping, or any other activity. However, I would like a way to learn the pronunciation of chinese characters I'm corrected on. If there was a way to click on a specific character and see the pinyin for it, this would be an even better learning experience.
Very disappointing. I was initially excited that this app offered Farsi. I speak 5 languages and now want to learn Farsi. But I'm a complete beginner. I set the app to beginner mode, and no matter how I tried every interaction with the ai tutor necessitated B1 competency... ie to be able to read a completely new alphabet and to construct sentences. I'm not sure how this could in any stretch of the imagination be sold as a beginner tool. I'll come back to it when I can speak some Farsi.
I had a free trial and then cancled it and subscribed to premium and was charged for it. I have an email confirmation receipt and the charge on my bank statement but premium isn't activated on the app. I tried to email them a few times and its just an automated email. There doesn't seem to be a way to get an actual person to help. At this point I basically threw $80 in the trash 😡 so frustrated and I don't know how to resolve this issue. I really liked the app until this happened.
This app needs a lot of work. It is a massive battery drain, doesn't support dark theme, push to talk is very annoying. It's way too strict. Spelling and grammar are important, but it's impossible to have a casual conversation. My Spanish speaking friends don't use ¡ and ¿ in our chats, and don't include a period at the end for something basic like 'Claro'. The dialogue follows a very predictable pattern without dynamics and the context can't remember more than the last message.
Simply the best use of AI. This app is an amazing way to practice any language it offers (and it offers a LOT of them!) It's simple, feedback is immediate, useful, and encouraging. I love learning languages but I get very scared to talk to people because I feel that they'll laugh at my clunkiness with their language. It's an anxiety / self-consciousness issue. This app constantly keeps conversations going, and I never feel judged for my mistakes. No ads wasting time, too. Very worth the money!
