It was good at the beginning but now a year in we all thought it would eventually be so much more. I understand its gacha and designed to extract money, but it's so low effort of an app and game. Basic features or comfort aren't there, everything is slow, no dark mode, repetitive missions, repetitive content, pack points should be combined into one pool. I've spent probably $100 on PTCGP and if I bought a different game for $100 and got this, I'd be furious.
Reviews for Pokémon TCG Pocket - Card Game
← Back to Pokémon TCG Pocket - Card GameThis app falls short of what it should be and is carried hard by the Pokemon name and creatures. The user experience is years behind other games, battles are stale and boring, social features are bare bones, and the latest "celebration" expansion is terrible for long time players. The list goes on, but the one positive thing is the art work for many of the cards are quite nice. If you want to have fun with an app that is well designed, look elsewhere or buy some physical Pokemon cards.
The game lacks a real purpose once you get going. Between the inability to trade for the rarest cards and the frequency of pack release, there's no hope that you're going to collect everything. And with all the battle emblems given out for pvp being identical and boring, there's no good incentive to lock into a 20 minute battle with other players. So at the end of the day, it's just a pack ripping sim with some fun AI battles that you will quickly clear out.
While the game is fun. It gets 2 stars just because of the annoying amount of menu clicks. I don't need a separate screen that I have to press okay on a wonder pick or a promo. It's a single card. I shouldn't have to be told that I got 4 booster stamina on a daily login quest. I know after the 3 time. Why do I have to go through 5 screens after every battle. It takes 10 seconds for menus to load on missions or decks (because it's not stored locally). Condense everything to 1 screen or scrollable
Introduced new TRADING mechanic into the TRADING CARD GAME and it's immediately the worst feature. It's so insanely expensive to trade that it's not only cost prohibitive to new players, but unless you're a whale it's outright nutty. I haven't missed a pack since release including the pass packs, I've spent a few bucks, and they will not get a penny more of my money until they fix trading. IT'S A TRADING CARD GAME JUST LET US TRADE. Cool down on trading? Fine. But it cost 4 cards to trade 1
I really love the changes that were made to the card game. I really like the wonder picks and the NPC battles. There is just something about collecting pokemon cards and not being able to trade them or share them with friends. For me, it just kills it for me. I have collected almost every card available with tons of duplicates. My friends are struggling to build decks, and I can't even help them. WE NEEDS TRADING THERE IS NOTHING TO DO WITH DUPES BESIDES MAKE SPARKLES.
It's pretty fun, though I do think it takes way to long for the pack stamina to reload, having to wait 12 hours just to open ONE, but other then that, I have experienced no bugs, OR crashes, and I have a pretty trashy phone, and other people are saying it crashes a lot, so maybe it's just them, or my phone is too trashy to crash. The game has good art, good graphics, good battling system, overall, it's just really good. Good job Pokémon.
Dull. I used to love the original computer version, but this is just a cash grab. You start out with no cards and have to wait 12 hours to get 5 new cards. Duplicates over 2 are pretty much useless. You can not trade. You can speed up the new card pull, but it requires a hard to get item or real money. The game is pretty much unplayable until you have several days' worth of cards. I'm on day two, and the tutorial was the only fun part. Another bad game that only sells because of the Pokemon logo
I love this game, I really do, but some of the features are really frustring. Finally trading is introduced and it is a mess. You cannot trade for high rarity cards which defeats the purpose of trading. You can also not request certain cards, just make an offer to a friend and hope they know what you want in return. On top of that you need to spend cards to earn "trade points" to trade certain cards, which just creates an unnecessarily confusing process. And don't get me started on flair.
Dropping my review from 2* to 1*. The new trading feature is abhorrent. You need to trade in your rare cards to be able to get points to trade and the exchange rate is predatory. In order to be able to trade for 1 card that I need, I would have to cash in most of my collection. I know they set it this way so that people will buy trade tokens, but shame on the developers for this. Shame. I have cancelled my premium subscription and I will no longer be spending a cent on this app.
Decent concept, collect cards and battle. I played the original TCG1 (and 2) and Gameboy, which had a plot and battling, this is just battling. There are only a few dozen battles in this, with challenges for each. The battling system is great and quick, and modified from the original TCG system. However, getting new cards is a slog. Wait 12 hours to get a pack of only 5 cards. No new cards for winning battles. No plot or characters. 8 different types of in game currencies that reduce wait time
Pros: Ripping packs is great. They reel you in with being able to open a ton of packs right off the bat, and then slow down the rate drastically. Battle system is better than expected, but it's more about just collecting. Cons: Highly addictive, but could easily become boring if you don't drop money into it. Battle system may start to feel repetitive after awhile and largely depends on luck (but no more than any other TCG) Bugs: Crashes several times a day, but I haven't lost anything from it.
The game plays well, with only minor input lag. The art and card design are the best part of the game. However, the trade mechanic is absolutely horrible. You have no idea what you could be getting offered in return if you initiate a trade. They NEED to add the ability to select 2-3 cards you would like to receive. If they fix trading this game is 5 stars, until then ....
While the game is quite fun, there are some honest critiques I have. The menus take a long time to load and the cards menu could be organized better. My biggest issue is the trading. The whole reason you trade is for a specific card you want. You should be able to select a preffered card when offering and the receiver should be able to do so as well. On the idea of the trade tokens, they are ok as long as you make them easier to obtain without paying. Other than that this a very fun card game.
I was super into this game and just waiting for trading to get added, but the way it was implemented is so horrible and just greedy. You can't even trade rare cards! What's even the point? It's supposed to be a thing you can do with your friends, but the currency is a barrier to that too. It's no longer just a cool friend experience, it actively steers you away from using it and now it's just a way to make more money. Very disappointed. An anti-trading trading card game.
Great, addicting game. However, I don't trust that the odds for specific cards are what the app says they are. it really feels like the odds on pulling rare cards are decreased significantly when the app event for the introduction of the new pack has been concluded. EDIT: down to 1 star because latest update made the game no longer work (freezes at entry screen), and customer service is nonexistent. Just gotta wait for an update to fix it, I guess
The artwork is good and the game play is fun initially, but once you complete the missions for quests, progress really slows down. They flood you with dopamine at first, and suddenly you you find you do not get packs nearly as fast. The paid store is too expensive for my taste. Overall, fun game to play for a time, but if you do not want to put money into it, you will probably want to put it down after a month or so. Edit: Decreased review to 2 (from 3) stars because of how absurd new prices are
Extremely simple, artwork-driven game with almost no content except for a thousand kinds of premium currency and heaps in-app purchases. This feels very much like a loot box cash-grab aimed at children. The battling feature is fine for the most part, but you can't attack or even attach energy on turn 1. If you go first, you will be a turn behind for the entire game, and will probably lose. Also the coin flips are really rigged to fail for some reason.
The go second advantage is not as significant as I initially thought. Even so, the turn order advantage could be flattened by releasing more cards that allow deck builds that want to go first. Then let the coin toss winner decide who goes first, and the turn order advantage problem goes away. It is impossible to read the Pokémon in the top left corner of a stage 1 or 2 card. It's difficult to click on a card during battle to read it. Otherwise, there is a lot to like.
While a redesign of the battles compared to standard play was a great idea, they totally dropped the ball when it came to balance. Be prepared to play against the same 3 or 4 decks every season with little variation. For some reason, lower ranks make you play against bots. The premium pass isn't worth the money at all, and trading sucks. The only good things to say are that the game works and if you like the idea of some free gambling on finding cool cards, maybe you'll have some fun.
