The model

P(exactly k more wins) = binomial(games left, k, adjusted win probability) P(reaching target) = Σ P(k) for every k that gets you there + P(exactly tying) × tiebreak probability

The binomial treats each remaining game as independent at a constant probability, which is a simplification — schedule strength varies game to game, and teams get injured — but it is the right shape for the question and far better than counting on your fingers.

The number people get wrong

Needing to win five of eight at a 55% true rate sounds close to a coin flip and is not: it comes out near 36%. The intuition that "we only need to win most of them" undersells how quickly the required run gets improbable, and it is why teams that look alive in week ten are usually not.

How are playoff odds calculated?

By modelling the remaining games as independent trials at an estimated per-game win probability, then summing the chance of every outcome that reaches the required win total. Professional models add strength of schedule, injuries and simulate the whole league; the arithmetic core is the same binomial calculation.

How many wins do you need to make the NFL playoffs?

Historically around 9 or 10 wins in a 17-game season gets a wild card, though it varies by conference and year — teams have reached the playoffs at 9-8 and missed at 10-7. The cut line depends on the strength of the conference far more than on any fixed number.

Why do playoff odds drop so fast after a loss?

Because each loss removes both a win from the total and a game from the remaining chances, so the required win rate over the games left rises twice as fast as intuition suggests. A team needing 5 of 8 has very different odds from one needing 5 of 7, even though only one game separates them.
