Screen Time Calculator
Four hours a day sounds unremarkable. It is 61 days a year — two full months of waking life. This converts a daily figure into the units that make it legible, and shows what an hour a day back would actually buy you.
The arithmetic nobody does
At four and a half hours a day and seven and a half hours of sleep, phone use consumes 27% of every waking hour. Over forty years that is roughly eleven years of waking life. These are not rhetorical figures; they are multiplication.
Pickups matter more than hours
Eighty pickups a day is one every twelve waking minutes. The damage there is not the screen time — it is that sustained attention needs an uninterrupted run to establish, and twelve minutes is not long enough to reach it. A day of eighty interruptions contains very few periods in which difficult work is even possible, regardless of how many total hours were available.
What an hour a day is worth
An hour reclaimed daily is 365 hours a year — about nine standard working weeks. Enough to learn an instrument to competence, read fifty books, or run a small business on the side. The calculator also prices it at your hourly rate, which for most people produces an uncomfortably large annual figure, and that is the point of showing it.
What actually reduces it
- Delete the two apps that dominate the report. Almost everyone's screen time is concentrated in two apps. The web versions still exist and are deliberately worse, which is the useful part.
- Charge the phone outside the bedroom. Removes the first and last twenty minutes of every day at a stroke.
- Turn off all non-human notifications. If it is not a person contacting you, it does not need to interrupt you.
- Greyscale. Sounds trivial, works well — the interfaces are colour-tuned to be compelling, and removing colour removes a surprising amount of the pull.
Questions people ask about this
How much screen time is too much?
There is no clinical threshold, and total hours matter less than what the hours displace. A useful test: does it come out of sleep, exercise, or time with people? Four hours that replaces television is different from four hours that replaces sleep. Express it as a share of waking hours — above about 30% is where most people report feeling it is out of hand.
How many days a year is 4 hours of screen time?
About 61 full 24-hour days, or 89 waking days at seven and a half hours of sleep — roughly three months of your conscious life each year. Over a forty-year span it comes to nearly ten years of waking hours.
What is the average screen time?
Most self-report surveys land between three and five hours a day for adults on phones alone, excluding work computers and television. Device-measured figures run consistently higher than self-reported ones, which is the more interesting finding: people underestimate their own use by a wide margin.
