Save percentage and goals against average tell different stories, and one of them is mostly about the team in front of the goalie. This computes both, plus goals saved above average, which separates the goaltender from his defence.
Save percentage measures the goalie; GAA measures the team
Goals against average is goals per sixty minutes, so a goaltender behind a defence that allows twenty shots a game will post a better GAA than an identical goaltender facing thirty-five — without making a single extra save. Save percentage divides by the shots actually faced, which is why it is the fairer measure of the goaltender himself.
Why GSAA is the number to look at
It converts save percentage into goals, which is the currency that decides games, and it scales with workload. A goaltender at .915 over 3,200 minutes has contributed far more than one at .918 over 900, and neither save percentage nor GAA shows that.

How do you calculate save percentage?
Subtract goals against from shots against, then divide by shots against. A goaltender facing 1,650 shots and allowing 132 has saved 1,518, giving a save percentage of .920. It is usually written to three decimal places without the leading zero.
What is a good save percentage?
Around .915 is starter quality in the modern NHL, .920 and above is genuinely good, and .930 over a full season is elite. League average has drifted with rule changes and shot quality measurement, so comparing across eras without adjusting for the league average of the time is misleading.
Is GAA or save percentage more important?
Save percentage, because goals against average depends heavily on how many shots the team in front allows. A goaltender behind a strong defensive side posts a good GAA without making more saves.
