Razz Fairness Calculator

A razz sells a card in equal spots and picks a winner at random. It is fair when the spots add up to roughly the card's value — and they frequently add up to considerably more. This checks the arithmetic before you buy in.

The one number that decides fairness

room total = spots × price per spot organiser margin = room total − card value your EV = (spots you buy ÷ total spots) × card value

A razz is fair when the room total is close to the card's value. Every dollar above that is the organiser's margin, taken from the participants collectively. A 10–15% margin is normal and covers shipping and effort; a 40% margin means you are buying lottery tickets at a bad price.

What to check before buying in

  • Value the card yourself. Razzes are frequently priced off an asking price or a peak sale rather than the current market.
  • Count the spots. Some razzes fill slowly and the organiser adds spots, which quietly dilutes everyone who bought early.
  • Ask how the winner is drawn. A verifiable public randomiser is the standard. Anything else requires trusting a stranger with your money.
  • Buying more spots does not improve value. It raises your chance and your cost proportionally — the expected value per dollar is unchanged.

Questions people ask about this

What is a razz in card collecting?

A raffle for a single card, sold as equally priced spots with the winner drawn at random. It is fair when the spots multiplied by the price come to roughly the card's market value; anything above that is the organiser's margin, paid collectively by everyone in the room.

Are razzes worth entering?

Only when the room total is close to the card's actual value. A 10–15% margin over that is normal and covers shipping and effort. Beyond about 25% you are buying an expensive lottery ticket, and the arithmetic is easy to check before you commit.

Does buying more razz spots improve your odds?

It raises your chance of winning and your cost in exactly the same proportion, so the expected value per dollar does not change at all. What more spots buy is a higher chance of any return and a larger loss when you do not win — variance, not value.
